How The Veterans of Foreign Wars Scam Works:

Theodore Roosevelt said, “A man who is good enough to shed his blood for his country I good enough to be given a square deal afterwards.” Our nation’s veterans should be revered and honored for the sacrifices they have made to protect the freedoms that we all enjoy. Therefore when scams against veterans make the rounds, it is particularly distressing.

There are two variations of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) scam: the Donation and the Payout. Let's take a look at them.

$50,000 Payout For Disability

The second variation is an online scam, wherein electronic communications are circulating, advises veterans of their eligibility for a payout of $50,000 due to their disability or simply – as the ad reads – the retired or less privileged.

The e-mail then goes on to request veterans’ basic information, such as name, dates of birth, address, etc. for the sole purpose of compromising the victims’ identities. This is how a scam email message looks like:

"My name is Mike, I'm special agent officer working for VFW program Help retired people with some people and disabled and the united states Government to help the deaf people and retied the less privilege all over the world,I want to let you know that you. you are among the list and we're here with your package now. If you're ready to claim your money $50.000.00 get back to us with this following information just to prove and signify that you're the real.

Your Age…..
Date of birth………..
Married/Single…..
VFW Post
E-mail……..
Hotmail, Yahoo, Aol, Facebook…..
Txt number
Do you Own a house or Rent Appt..

We need all the information because a lot of people lied to us and claimed to be the real person,so we need you to be honest with us, because most of the deaf, hard hearing,e.t.c, benefits from the organization, get back to us asap."

Needless to say, giving them all your personal information will lead to identity theft.

How To Avoid The Veterans of Foreign Wars Scam:

VFW is not associated with this e-mail in any capacity. Be aware that the Veterans’ Administration is responsible for sending any communications regarding pending benefits or payouts for veterans.

The VFW is a social organization and gathering place – as well as charitable organization – that both honors and helps care for veterans of foreign wars. However, they have no authority to issue benefit payouts to anyone.

Also, for grammar mistakes in the email. There are plenty in the message listed above.
