Roblox Scams: What Parents Need to Know

roblox scams

Roblox is a hugely popular online gaming platform, with around 123 million people playing every day. It’s free to download and use, with a wide range of games for kids of all ages. There are shooters, obstacle courses, and even games that let you build your own theme park. Creative players can also use Roblox to build games and share them with others online.

But scammers are looking to take advantage of Roblox’s popularity and its in-game currency, Robux, which players can purchase with real money or earn through certain creator activities. Children may be tempted by offers to win Robux or take part in exclusive events, and may interact with Roblox scammers without checking whether a giveaway or event is legitimate.

Read on to learn about different types of Roblox scams and how to spot and avoid them.

Roblox Scams: Fake Login Pages

Roblox has an in-game messaging function, which allows people to interact with existing in-game friends or make new ones. Unfortunately, Roblox scammers use the messaging function to send links to everything from offers to other games, all of which are fake.

The link will often take someone to a login page that looks just like the real Roblox website login screen. The young person enters their Roblox details, and the fake login page captures their password, giving the scammers access to their account. Scammers can steal personal and financial information and use the account to send similar links to the victim’s friends list.

How to avoid: Tell your kids not to click suspicious links sent by other players, even if the message seems to come from someone they know. They should never enter their Roblox password on a third-party website and should tell you immediately about suspicious messages or accounts.

Roblox Scams: Fake Events

Sometimes, Roblox runs events, such as holiday specials like a platform-wide Halloween event. Scammers take advantage of these by promoting fake events, sometimes through ads on social platforms, like Discord, where young gamers gather to share information. The fake event gets shared through numerous channels to thousands of users, often with a convincing countdown prompting a click-through before the event ends.

Users click the event link, which may install malware or try to steal the user’s details.

How to avoid: Remind young players that official events are only advertised from the main Roblox platform, not through third-party links.

Roblox Scams: Fake Giveaways

Every kid wants to win 10,000 Robux. So a “giveaway” promising a good chance to win in-game currency is very tempting.

Of course, these are always scams. Roblox will never direct message a user telling them about a Robux giveaway. Like the other scams, they contain links designed to install malware or steal data.

How to avoid: Explain that even the most realistic-looking giveaway is always a scam unless it’s on the official Roblox website.

Roblox Safety Tips to Tell Your Kids

Roblox Scams What Parents Need to Know

Some more ways to avoid Roblox scams:

  • Never take a conversation off-platform. Someone offering a giveaway or event may try to move the conversation off the Roblox site (Telegram, WhatsApp, or another service). Tell your children not to share passwords, verification codes, or personal information, and report suspicious behavior through Roblox.
  • Be skeptical of anything too good to be true: Giveaways or offers to test new games before they go live can be tempting for avid gamers, but they’re almost always scams.
  • Check security and privacy settings: On a PC, users can go to Settings > Privacy & Content Maturity > Communication and adjust settings so they can only receive messages from friends, not random players. Similar settings exist for console versions of the platform.
