How the scam works:
Is it reported that in several parts of India, travelers are victims of this scam while they are eating in shady restaurants.
During lunch or supper, a sharp feeling of dizziness and nausea comes out of the blue. Sweaty and a little concerned, the tourists ask the waiters for any kind of medication.
Friendly and willing to help, the waiters say they don’t have anything, but luckily the next door clinic might. The victims go next door, which is a shady place as well. The “nurse” will take care of the patient, offering some pills (most likely aspirins), a cold compress, and then a bill of $50.
An hour later, the traveler is perfectly back to normal. This is not an isolated case. The waiters at the restaurant put a mildly toxic substance in the food and then go and collect half of the cut, from the next door.
How to avoid:
If you suddenly get sick during your meal, just leave and go for a walk. Take some fresh air. However tasty the dinner might be, you can even tell the waiters you think there is a problem with the food and you are not willing to pay for it.
