How the scam works:

This scam is prevalent in most of the European capitals. Scammers target couples and go straight to the girl, putting a rose in her hand. "Hold it, Hold it", the scammers might say with a friendly smile.

As soon as the girl grabs the rose, the scammer turns to the man and asks for 5 or 10 EURO (or another crazy price). To avoid the embarrassment, most guys pay right away…

How to avoid:

Sure, if you don't mind, give him 10 EURO, but learn that it might happen to you more than once in a day. What would you do the second or third time? Just tell the guy that you buy flowers for your girl when you want, not when he wants.

Normally, in Rome, one rose costs not more than a couple of Euros. So, if you’re visiting Rome and plan to go out with your girlfriend, it might be helpful to buy a rose as soon as the evening starts (flower stands are opened 24 hrs a day in Rome): your girlfriend would be happy and nobody is gonna try to sell you another one 🙂
