Conference Invitation

Event Invitation Scam: How It Works

This tricky scam comes as a very tempting invitation for regular people with great hobbies, businessmen, lecturers, activists, philanthropists or even CEOs to attend various events, organized in a different city. Such events could be seminars during major events like Mental Health Awareness Week, Women Deliver or Human Trafficking & Social Justice Conference.

However, these are not all. Think of a well-known annual gathering in your industry and replace any of the ones mentioned above with it. Criminals find their victims' profiles on social media and craft an invitation tailored to their name and passions or businesses. How does the scam work?

Watch the video below to see the Event Invitation scam exposed:

Conference Invitation Scam Video

Scammers impersonate the administrators of those big events – using real names from the official websites – and contact the victims with tempting offers. The recipient of the letter is invited to be a speaker at an event or a conference held in a different city or country. For this event, the plane tickets, meals and local transportation are provided.

The only thing that the guest has to take care of is the hotel room, which has to be pre-booked as the organizers want to make sure they have the guarantee that the guest will show up. They say will pay for the hotel once the guest checks out.

With plane tickets and meals provided, several guests are okay with booking their own hotel rooms. This is where the scam comes in: the hotel suggested by the fake organizers, supposedly close to the conference center, is listed on a fake travel website.

The guest then opens the bogus weblink – created by using beautiful stock photos – and provide their credit card numbers. They pay for the hotel but they will never receive the plane tickets for the conference.

Below is a scam email (grammar mistakes included) recently received by Scam Detector, from the e-mail address

Conference Invitation Scam: How To Avoid

If you receive an invitation to a conference that you have not previously heard about, check with other people working in the same field. Either no one will have heard of it, which proves it is a scam, or they will all have received the same invitation, which also proves it is a scam.

If the event is real but you are in doubt, contact the organizers yourself, using the phone numbers or email addresses listed on their official website.
