How The NHS Digital Passport Scam Works

Many citizens are looking for an easier way to get the pass that gives them access to more liberties. Unfortunately, that translated into several online traps. Whether it's is about the NHS Test and Trace scam or the Digital passport, a plethora of fake websites popped all over the internet offering the document without too many complications. It sounds good, right? Beware.

Regardless of where you live in the United Kingdom, you could quickly become a victim of this type of fraud. It works as a ‘processing fee' to issue your new NHS passport. In reality, the scammers just take victims' credit cards and max them out within minutes. If you have received any NHS branded email, text message, or an invitation, feel free to share its content in the comments section, so others are warned.

How The NHS Trace And Trace Scam Looks Like

As mentioned, you may receive an email with an invitation from a health-related organization to get a digital passport. Alternatively, you may even see ads on Facebook or Instagram promoting the bogus offers. The message's content may state that a limited amount of passports could be issued—basically, a lot of non-sense, but unfortunately tempting enough for many people to fall for it.

Here is one of the variations for the NHS Digital passport scam:

NHS Digital passport scam

“Dear [name]”

“Starting today, you can apply for a Digital Passport. The Coronavirus Digital Passport is documentation proving that you have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or recently recovered from COVID-19. The passport will allow you to travel safely and freely around the world without having to self-isolate.”

“Who is eligible? UK citizens and their families, and legal residents”.

“How do I get the certificate? You can get your digital passport via the NHS portal by clicking the button below [compromised Get Digital Passport button].”

“How does it work? Each issuing body has been allocated a digital signature embedded in the QR code. Border staff will scan de QR code to see the data, although no personal data will be seen – nor will personal data of the holder go through the gateway which nations are using to verify signatures.”

As you might expect, clicking on the fake Get Digital Passport button will take you to a page that requires all your personal information. That also includes the credit card number, as the scammers will need you to pay a small processing fee for the passport.
