Credit Card Not Working Scam: How It Works
The criminal – impersonating a bank employee in your city – calls a local restaurant (or shop) early in the morning and says there is a problem with the bank’s card payments system throughout the city. Using professional language and giving a fake ID number, he informs that due to the reason mentioned above, the store will have to redirect all the card payments to a phone number, which will be provided to them by the “bank”. How does the scam work?

The caller insists the shop/restaurant staff will have to obtain their customer’s security details to process any card payments.
Then, later on, when a customer finishes their shopping or meal and comes to pay with a card from the particular bank the scammer claimed to be from, the shop/restaurant calls the number the “bank employee” had provided.
The “employee” (the scammer) then asks to speak to the customer to go through their security questions. Once the fraudster has obtained a sufficient amount of security information from the client, then she instructs the restaurant to put the transaction through.
From there, the criminal can use the account numbers and the personal information in any way she/he wants.
How To Avoid the Bank Card Not Working Scam:
If you are a restaurant/shop owner, instruct your staff to call the real bank on its real number right after the scammer calls. If you are a customer, refuse to give the security numbers of your card just like that. Make sure you phone your bank back as well on its established number to confirm the request is genuine.
