Besides the fact that the scammers call and ask for donations, they even come around to pick them up. The scary part is they have gotten a hold of the veterans’ personal information and–to make it even easier–they ask the victims to leave the money in an envelope between the doors. Surprisingly or not, seniors fall for it.

Veterans Outreach Center: How to Avoid The Scam

Ask for an address, phone number, email, or website, and contact the organization directly to verify the person's name and contact information they provided. If you suspect foul play contact the police immediately.

A good rule of thumb is never to give out any personal information over the phone, especially if it seems to be your lucky day and you've won money or prizes of something of the sort. Verify things first just to be safe!
