Toll Charges Scam

How the scam works:

Scenario 1. Depending on the state you are living in, some tollbooths have been removed and now charges mount on the car itself through a great electronic toll-collection system called E-ZPass. Sneaky rental companies use this fact to impose surcharges on you over and above the actual toll amounts ($20 for “processing” in one case, $8 in another).

Scanerio 2. In a different variation of the scam, criminals send mass-emails claiming to be E-ZPass Service Centre representatives. The email might come from manager@doctorgraphic.it and the subject might be: “Payment for driving on toll road”. The content of the email, as seen in the image above, is:

Dear customer,

You have not paid for driving on a toll road. This invoice is sent repeatedly, please service your debt in the shortest time possible. The invoice can be downloaded HERE (malicious scam link).

How to avoid:

Request all the details you can when you rent a car. If you know where you will be driving, talk to the agent about the eventual toll charges. On the other hand, do not open links from senders who address to you as “Dear customer”. If YOUR car has been spotted doing anything illegally, rest assured you will have your name or license plate mentioned or photographed.

You are kindly asked to pay your debt as soon as possible.

You can review the invoice in the attachment.
