Instagram For PC Scam: How It Works
Instagram is a wildly popular photo-sharing social networking site. Kids and adults alike enjoy posting pictures and commenting on friends’ photos as well. In fact, Instagram has become the preferred site for adolescents, who feel their parents have taken over Facebook! However, there is a ton of Instagram fraud out there.
There is a program being marketed as a PC version of the Instagram photo-sharing app. Called “Instagram for PC”, this program – once installed – will cause pop-up windows to overwhelm the screen with requests to fill out online surveys. This “program” practically does everything except allow one to access Instagram!
The program is being promoted through social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook. While this isn’t malware, scammers are making money based on how many people they can lead to the surveys to hopefully complete them. The program gets loaded to the PC by clicking a download link for a missing .dll file, or when a box pops up asking the user to “activate” Instagram for PC.
How to avoid:
It is wise to be aware that many of these apps that are spread on social networking sites are often not legitimate programs, but are scams of one sort or another. It helps to do research on things such as this if you come across an advertisement for an app that sounds interesting to you. By doing a bit of research, you can often find quickly that the app is legitimate or a narrowly avoided scam.
