Hotel Discount Scam: How It Works
This could happen anywhere, so beware. While traveling, someone you just met has a great recommendation for a hotel. "I stayed there last week – it's amazing. Take this card, they told me I will have a discount whenever I go back there. Unfortunately I won't be able to, at least not soon – so why don't you use it?".
Happy to get a deal, the tourist takes the card and goes to the hotel, which turns out to be low quality and with poor customer service.
Furthermore, the "discounted" price is actually more than the hotel room is worth. By the time the tourist realizes the scam, the "discount" is already in the referrer's pocket.
