Scammers set up booths or street kiosks where they sell this product at. They even look very official by wearing uniforms. The product they sell is a spray that once applied on your license plate it will show as a black rectangle in the flash photography. They use a "special camera with a radar lens".

To convince you that their product works, they spray it on a plate they have handy. Then they take a picture of it and show it to you. But here is where the victims fall for the scam.

People who are still suspicious ask to take a picture of their own car's license plate. This way, they are 100% sure it works. The sellers of the spray comply and do it. You look at your car's license plate in the image and sure enough, you see your number blocked! This could be the best product ever. Convinced? Forty bucks are a lot cheaper than a bunch of speeding tickets so why not buy the spray?

How does it work? The scammers simply buy cheap hair spray they can find and put a different sticker around it, printed professionally. Hairspray doesn't give a black spot when you take a picture, but the scammers use a marker to draw a black spot on the lens of their camera. Then they can take a picture of anything and align the black spot on top the object that needs to be covered (the license plate).

They claim their camera is special and has the Police type of lens just so you can't take a pic with your smartphone and zoom into it.

How to Avoid: Buy a Police Radar Detector Instead

First of all, do not speed. Second, spraying stuff on your license plate is illegal. If you're trying to avoid the speedicng tickets your best choice is to buy great ranked Police radar detectors such as Cobra RAD450, RAD 350, or D7 Laser. It's worth the investment if you get at least two speeding tickets per year.
