Invested a small amount of money in good faith. Then, after my investment ended, Treasury Direct sent my money to a 3rd party that claims I owe them a debt. I did not get any notice until after they sent 3rd party money. The debt is in dispute because it isnt valid. Do not invest your money here, choose another platform. The US government has no respect for American citizens money anymore. Very disappointed.
TreasuryDirect makes it easy to take your money for an investment. But should you ever want to sell your 10 Year Treasury Bill, like I want to, forget about it. It is a ridiculously onerous process! It took a while to figure out the forms required for the transfer to my broker. Then my broker, Schwab, took a few weeks to get the required Medallion Signature from headquarters and forward the package to Treasury Direct (on 2-20-24). Then, when I heard nothing from TD for weeks, I tried to locate a phone number to inquire, because my email inquiries were never answered. When I finally reached customer service, they said it would take 6-8 weeks for them to transfer my asset to Schwab. How ridiculous is that!? This is government bureaucracy at it's worse. Beware if you use this agency to invest any funds. They are TERRIBLE to do business with.
Treasurydirect allows you to directly participate inin all regularly scheduled auctions that are used bythe Dept. of Treasury to issue their T-bills, Notes andBonds. And here is how you do it. First you opena Treasurydirect account and link your bank to it.In your account, you will find an updated listingof the upcoming auctions. Just select fromthat list the auction that you want to participate in.You will then be asked to type in the amount that youwant to buy. And if you do so correctly, you willautomatically get 'the security you want, in the amount you want.' And all with no fees.In other words, your bid is given preferential treatment. And when this happens, your order will also be filled at the Best Price. Just be very sure that there is enough money in your bank account to pay for your order. With T-Bills, you receive no interest until maturity. At that time, what you had paid, and the interest due you, will be deposited back into your bank account. They don't tell you this, but you will be dealing directly with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York - the Fiscal Agency of the United States. As a rule, they do not deal with individuals. So do not be surprised if the Customer Service you receive,is not quite what you would normally expect. And for this reason, just one Star is deducted.Instead, it is up to you to understand the termsof your upcoming auction. That information iscontained in its Treasury Offering Announcement.Just print it out and highlight the information that you will need. What you will be required to pay, will not be discloseduntil your auction is over. The details concerningthe outcome are contained in a second announcement, Treasury Auction Results for 'competitive' bidders. It has all the pricing information. Be aware that there is also another version that shows the results for 'non-competitive' bidders which contains no pricing information whatsoever. So, if you mistakenly print out the wrong one, just print out the other one. WARNING: If something goes wrong and you fail to pay for your purchase, The New York Fed is empowered to deal with you on a 'case-by-case' basis. Their power to do so appears to be virtually unlimited. Here is an example of what they can do.Lets say you are receiving Social Security or Military Retirement Benefits. The time for Treasury Direct to transfer securities that you have bought there to another institution is "not less than 20 weeks (5 months)." You cannot sell securities (T-bills, T-bonds, T-notes) on the site, and must transfer them out to a brokerage firm to do so. If you research carefully, you will see that you have to transfer securities out to sell them. (You can redeem savings bonds online.) I have earned close to an extra percent on my T-bills vs. funds in my brokerage institution, so maybe this is worth it to you if you are certain you won't need your securities before maturity. But nowhere on TreasuryDirect.Gov does it say that this process takes a minimum of 5 months. Misleading and poor communication with poor back office processes spoil an otherwise good service.Here is the official communication from them! Your request is important to us and will receive attention as soon as possible. “Can Elon Musk Save Treasury Direct?”
I am Personal Rep for my aunt who passed this past February. While still alive, I had her move her savings bonds into Treasury Direct, thinking it would be easier to address payout after she died. In May, when I submitted the paperwork, the wait time was estimated at 4 months. I waited and called in September and was told the wait time had increased to 'expect it to take 12 months' due to high processing activity. Wow. Don't die holding savings bonds. If the wait time is as advertised, this estate will have extra expenses for tax and estate filing due to the delay. If NASA has to rely on Elon to bring back its own astronauts, perhaps TreasuryDirect can turn to him as well to introduce some technology and some AI into the process to aid the overburdened staff.
“Outdated Platform”
A U S Treasury investment site that is secure & confusing. No statements, no paper, all online, & no fun. Even Savings Bonds are now virtual. God help you if they freeze your accounts, cuz you will need a Medallion Stamp from your bank to get your money back in a few months.
“Everything wrong with the government”
I bought some I series bonds last year and recently decided to redeem them after one year. However, it has been over a week, and I haven't received the money yet. I reached out to TreasuryDirect through email, but they replied saying I should call them instead. After reading reviews from other users, I'm concerned that I may have lost my money or that it will take a lot of effort and time to receive my payment. I recommend avoiding TreasuryDirect due to their lack of customer service. Instead, consider investing in an S&P 500 index fund, where you can expect better returns and have legal recourse and a reputable business to address any customer service issues. “Should be a joke but it's not”
This is a site that might be appropriate for the last century. Simple tasks are very complicated, and the new security procedures are outlandish: the original security questions you may have answered years ago - if you don't remember one of them, you are going to get locked out. You will get repeatedly asked the same security questions in the same session over and over and over. Is this a joke? There is huge risk of losing access to your account which effectively means you can't do anything with any of your holdings. The worst customer service ever. Service
“Zero stars”
Worst website for a financial product that I have ever tried to use. Make several requests for the one time password. When you finally get it the site states that it is wrong (which it wasn't) and locks the account. Done with this. Withdrawing all of my money. The web designers are idiots. Service Quality
“My ibond purchase disappeared.”
I purchased a 10,000 ibond 11 months ago, which I verified with my bank. The money was withdrawn by Treasury. Planning to redeem in a month I checked the account only to discover there was no record of the Ibond purchase. I called customer service, but no luck connecting. I e-mailed an inquiry and received an automatic reply saying that only emails pertaining to pending cases will be read. The others, will not be read. They mention the telephone customer service hours, but also say that call volumes are unusually heavy during those times. Meaning short of staying on the phone for hors on end there is no possibility of getting through without a legal challenge, which is expensive.

They really tout how converting your paper bonds to digital is easier to manage. IT IS NOT! Do not use Treasury Direct! I log in to my account one day and can view my bonds, transfer, sell but the next time I log in, they are gone. Who knows where they went! The site is a maze of hidden or ridiculously small clickable words, and navigation is confusing. Treasury Direct could be described as a scam. “Run as fast as you can”
Do NOT open an account with Treasury Direct. I attempted to change the bank account linked to my treasury direct account and now my account is locked. I had to submit a form notorized by my bank. Now Im being told it will take 6 months to make any changes. They are now basically holding the money from my t bills that have matured and not giving me any interest on them for 6 months. The customer service is horrendous and the website is flawed. Instead buy your t-bills in the secondary market because you are basically getting the same return. Service Value

It just is the worst design I have ever seen and too many times it after I click on a tab when I'm in it locks me out and I have to call a number to unlock my access. “Typical Gov't Website”
I've paid taxes to the US Treasury for 60+ years. I tried creating an account and they claim they have no record of me. They want me to go to bank to get a form certified then snail mail it back to them. There is no immediate internet or phone Customer Service. They reply "we're too busy to answer any questions". It would be interesting to know what they're busy doing. Maybe they should try doing their jobs. A total and complete waste of time, but typical of a gov't service - no accountability from bottom to top.
“Rage inducing customer support”
I call their customer service because I can't log in (not because I entered my password/security questions wrong -- no their $#*! just doesn't work period). I listen to a condescending answering machine and hold for 30 minutes while at work, only for an impatient representative hang up on me after 5 minutes. Like $#*! me right, it's okay that I waited 30 minutes for their $#*! system while at work but if I can't produce the required info in 10 seconds I get hung up on. Also in their infinite wisdom they're only available 8AM-5PM Eastern time on workdays, cause $#*! the rest of the country right? People in the west coast clearly don't have jobs / don't pay taxes so they don't deserve customer service and must be ready to call at 5AM-2PM. “Why even bother investing in Bonds with Treasusry Direct”
Reading the reviews here and lamenting about my own experience, I cant help but think, Why Bother! Support is non existent. To think I should invest thousands of dollars in bonds over time then when I need them what will happen? How can we really believe that our money is safe? Hard to believe this is how Treasury Direct operates. Look for Investments elsewhere! “No great help when trying to call”
They tell you up front before you even call that everything and everybody is busy. So, I stayed on the line about 35 minutes - this is after calling several times. That's it. I have other things to do. I can see that there would not be any reason they should provide good customer service - they would get no commissions, etc. I was thinking if we gave them a zero rating, there just would not be response to try to improve. I get the impression that someone said, "o. K. let's set up a token agency for the public". “Pretty simple (so far) to open an account with Treasury Direct”
I opened an account today with Treasury Direct, to buy I-Bonds. It was a smooth ride. Yes it took maybe 30 minutes to open, but all seems to be fine so far. At the end of opening the account, they have a review and this was posted as of what the people have reported on this website: Excellent 62% Good 28% Fair 6% Poor 4% I followed an online tutorial that made it pretty easy. Just check, and check and check again all your numbers. Happy investing.
“Wait time on phone is 2 hours and counting...”
My account was locked due to incorrectly answering a security question. Instead of having a modern, updated website (theirs is a dinosaur!) and having 2-factor authentication, now the wait time on the phone is 2 hours and counting. Unbelievable. UPDATE: An actual person answered my call. He was kind and fixed everything for me. (I think I got lucky with only a 2-hour wait - others were not so lucky.) “If you want to buy treasury bonds, bills, notes, etc”
If you want to buy treasury bonds, bills, notes, etc. directly from the US Government, this is the place to do it. The fees are the lowest and you can trust them as much as you can trust any thing I suppose. The bad news is, as of May 3,2013 you essentially are paying the government to borrow your money since most (all?) real yields are currently negative and if interest rates rise as they one day will, all us bond holders will probably lose even more money. That said, what other assets look more attractive these days? I wish I knew...
“I got through”
I am trying to cash out matured EEs and have the cash deposited at my bank. Now, after three month of inaction, they send me a letter that I first suspected was from a scammer (and maybe still so). It was factually incorrect and full of spelling errors! So far it cost me $900 in lost interest and there is no end in sight! HOWEVER, I upgraded my rating to two stars because I finally got through by phone (called at 8am and was put on hold for 'only'30 minutes). “Website not user-friendly”
I've used Treasury Direct to cash in savings bonds, but the website is difficult to use. Login page uses a virtual keyboard to enter password and my clicks sometimes register nothing and sometimes duplicate entries. Site does not allow display of password to verify entries. Takes me multiple tries to get in. Once I'm in, an error (?) navigating from one page to another kicks me out my account & requires another login. Wish they would allow password display on login and kick me back to your account page instead of out the website completely. Worst website I've ever used.
“5 stars compared to Fidelity...”
Call at 5AM to avoid long holds and if you want something to whine about, try Fidelity, where they are professionals at misinformation and asking you 'how much are you planning on bringing in?'. My star rating is scored on the curve. These people at TD are doing very well given how underfunded and in demand they are. I taught myself how to maximize the site, i.e. I set up multiple links to several bank accounts, payroll direct deposit, and I use the C of I as my sweep account. Much better than brokerages to earn a steady return on money needed in <2 years. Tip for consumers:Yes, first call Fidelity's so called Investor Solutions dept *******548 and ask their employees some questions that you already know the answer to and see how many different incorrect answers you get, so you have a point of reference for evaluating TD. Here's a question you should definitely try: Tell them you want to transfer a TreasuryDirect T-bill to Fidelity and what is Fidelity's routing number and Bank for transferring T-bills to Fidelity. You will get multiple answers.

I think you need to update your info on TreasuryDirect.gov. I've been dealing with them since they stopped selling savings bonds in the banks and have had no problems and always give them an excellent rating.
