Is tellwell.ca Legit?

I just published my third book with Tellwell. The first time was a good experience. From there, each successive book has had more problems and the administration of sales and royalties is not very transparent. The team has become less responsive to emails, less accurate in their work and less inclined to answer questions or resolve issues. My only good and consistent experience has been with editing and marketing. I had plans to do two books a year and my sales consultant can’t be bothered to follow up with my concerns. As well, a deadline was missed for a seasonal book, it was not available online due to a file error and I missed valuable holiday sales. Again, I was told I would receive a phone call from Simon and others, and while the issue was resolved, there was no additional response or customer service. Currently I have been waiting for quarter 3 royalties. Again, no response as of yet to my email, and only vagueness as to a payment date. The regular date has passed by over a week and the account just states pending. It really has tested my trust and loyalty to a company and team that I initially enjoyed and envisioned a long term relationship with. Very difficult not to question my choice and the stability of the company.

They provided everything I needed to be a sucess. If I had questions they were promt with their response. I felt supported throughout the whole experience. If you are like me and get anxious with navigating the world that is publishing, then let Tellwell be your guide, you won't regret it!

All deliverables on the project were completed early or on time. Correspondence and phone calls were always polite and prompt. Price and deliverables were comparable or better compared to other self publishers.Quality control was lacking. Some changes I sent during the revision rounds were missed or not done correctly. I sensed that nobody at Tellwell was checking the work that was done. An incorrect word got through to the online listings and has never been corrected. I paid extra for this change and was assured it would be done. Marketing was good but my book has never been shown on the Tellwell website as either a new release or in print.Update: I can confirm that quality control has improved. Requested corrections have been made.

Tellwell took over my previous publisher earlier this year. In July 2024, after withdrawing my two books from sale, I requested two post-publication changes to my covers. I paid for the changes, and Tellwell offered to re-distribute the books free of charge.Despite my online account stating the projects are complete, online sellers still show the previous covers. I have reached out via email, which is the only contact method if you're not a Canadian resident. No one responds to their contact page; emails end up who knows where.Writer beware!

Having heard horror stories about publishing, I was leery of going to a traditional publishing house. So when I was looking for self publishing options, Tellwell was the 1st one to pop up.
