Is britishmuseum.org Legit?

Just been to see the ‘Life in the Roman Army’ exhibition. Some very interesting exhibits, but why, oh why, did you put all of the explanatory plaques below hip level? It is impossible to read them if someone is standing closer than a metre away from the plaque. Can’t you do as the Met in New York does and bring them up to chest or eye level? What should have been a great two hours browsing the displays turned into a painful duck and weave as one tried to read the information with it constantly being obscured by someone wandering in front of the plaque or simply queuing to look at the next exhibit.

I visit the British Museum about once a month and think it’s wonderful!Today I made a complete hash up of my online shopping orders and ended up duplicating an order and splitting another into two separate orders. All my own fault. I contacted the British Museum Customer Services by email and the brilliant Oren Harte got back to me within an hour and sorted everything out. Fantastic!!

Stolen Parthenon sculptures and many other items that should be returned to Greece and other countries. Nobody ever authorized their removal.

It was an excellent tour. Helped me understand nuance of civilisations across Europe and how they evolved over period. Particularly liked the displays on MONEY and CLOCKUnforgettable experience

I went here a few weeks ago and couldn't believe it was free and run on donations. There are some of the most incredible treasures of the world in this place and it was pristine clean and gorgeous.

What’s happened to The British Museum ????Recent visit was very disappointing, ticket we had booked was not checked despite being lead to believe we needed the ticket to gain entry. Entry to the museum was poorly organised and over filled with people, the museum was poorly organised, number of displays much smaller than we expected. No interesting exhibitions. Considering this is ‘The British Museum’ frankly we have been to much better museums in other parts of the country. Unfortunately it was an uncomfortable boring experience. Shop and cafe poor and seating areas very crowded, no air con anywhere in museum, very uncomfortable and hot. Even exit from the museum was poor as we where unable to leave but had to wait in the heat until other visitors had entered only then where we allowed to exist the gates.

Waiting time was a little long but overall had a good day with the family i would visit again

Visited the Legion life in the Roman army exhibition. Absolutely heaving, very dark, could not read the descriptions due to jostling & shadows from other people. I gave up after 15 mins. Cut the numbers of people and put descriptions higher up. Very disappointed.

Fabulous exhibits completely overwhelmed by the number of people allowed in. Charge them £5 each and reduce the crush. Food massively overpriced if you can get to it. Toilets were like attending a football match. Shocking !

This museum is a scandal. We went on 9 April 2024 to see the Roman Legion exhibition. We paid £22 each. The place was rammed. The queue for the toilet was at least 15 minutes.NOBODY pays. Crowds of disinterested tourists thronging the place.The exhibition itself was underwhelming with almost no audiovisual content and overcrowded. I stood behind countless people trying to see the exhibits.This museum is poorly presented and crowded. The solution? Charge visitors the price of a coffee to get in and improve the general environment.In addition the cafe was unappealing and I had to wait 10 mins for a coffee. A horrible day out.

30 minute security queue, more staff handling queue than checking bags. Ironic given ongoing scandal of stqff stealing exhibits

This is a dismal unwelcoming place.The unattractive security tent has tatty posters attached to the screens with old sellotape.Lighting in some of the galleries is very poor.The lift, when you eventually find it, is very small.Thank goodness I am not a Member: the Members' Room looks very uninviting.For an example of how a museum should be run, look no further than the V&A,

Very rude staff! One in particular I didn’t catch her name but she was an awful woman, she had zero people skills and zero ability to talk to children correctly, within seconds of walking into one particular gallery I saw her bend down in my 7 year olds daughters face and when I said to her not to approach her like that and if she had a problem with her then speak to her adult she sarcastically said “why doesn’t she speak English” If she hates the general public she ought to rethink her job choices.

This place is a total insult to common sense. Even if you pre- book a ticket you have to join a queue half a mile long. I can't think of anything I want to see so desperately to bother with this system. Well done British Museum, hundreds of unhappy customers. A terrible experience, wish I hadn't bothered.

Terrible signage for pre paid exhibition made me late for show (luxury and power, Persia to Greece), and what a very disappointing exhibition it was! Given rave reviews by the media (did they ply them with champagne in return?!) two tiny rooms with a few objects including a pair of trousers that looked like they’d been made up yesterday out of a modern Welsh blanket?!) the only upside was plenty of steps walked so a great workout, but i really resent paying £15 for such a hugely underwhelming experience

Wife bought online a timed ticket for the Stonehenge Exhibition.She arrived to find one huge queue for everyone in the street outside the gates - those simply wanting to go into the museum, those wanting to buy tickets for the exhibition and those who already had tickets.It was only once people were inside the gates that they were split into those that had tickets and those that didn't. By then it was long past the time my wife had selected for her visit. She is wondering what was the point of booking in advance.

It is a national disgrace to display artifacts acquired under such questionable circumstances during the British colonial period. The staff referred to items being "found", I am sure the Greeks knew exactly what was in the Parthenon before Lord Elgin and the Army hacked the marbles off the wall. The place is poorly managed, dangerously crowded with ineffective ticketing to manage visitors and people spilling all over Great Russell Street. My children were amazed the place is even allowed and it felt wrong being there. I will not return until the government legislates to allow the museum to return the looted items from all over the world. Recommendation- How about displaying British historical artefacts as the main collection and take foreign works on loan? Its basically a pirate's treasure haul now.Also 25 quid to see a temporary exhibition is ridiculous.

Their website used to be excellent, replete with easily accessible images, it’s had a disastrous make over though, and it’s now unfit for purpose. Where are all the marvellous pictures gone ? Where’s William Blake, where are the watercolours, where’s Durer, where are all those beautiful engravings ? It’s appalling this website, once a great national resource has been reduced to something you’d think was intended to discourage the user’s interest in the arts.

It is not possible to get in without pre-booking.

This is a place where you could spend a whole day – at least.
