استان قم با وسعتي معادل 631,14 كيلومتر مربع در جنوب پايتخت واقع شده است . براساس آخرين تقسيمات سياسي و اداري در سال 1375 ، شهرستان قم تنها شهرستان استان و شهر قم مركز شهرستان و استان قم ميباشد . اين استان از شمال به جلگه ورامين و شهرري از استان تهران و ساوه از استان مركزي ، از جنوب به شهرستانهاي محلات و دليجان از استان مركزي و كاشان از استان اصفهان و كوير نمك ، از غرب به شهرستانهاي آشتيان و تفرش از استان مركزي محدود است . استان قم در قلمرو كوير مركزي ايران واقع شده است . ناهمواريهاي استان قم مشتمل بر نواحي كوهستاني ، پايكوهي و دشتي است . شهر قم به علّت مجاورت با بيابان و دوري از دريا ، اقليمي خشك و كم رطوبت و بارشي اندك و نامناسب دارد . بيشتر زمينهاي اين استان قابليت كشاورزي ندارند و به حاشيه درياچه نمك يا مسيله معروفاند . این استان در سال 1375 ، حدود 853044 نفر جمعّيت داشته است كه از اين تعداد 16/91 درصد در نقاط شهري و 82/8 درصد در نقاط روستايي سكونت داشتهاند . گفته ميشود كه شهر قم پيش از دوره اسلامي نيز وجود داشته است ولي گروهي اعتقاد دارند كه شهر قم بعد از اسلام بنا گرديده است . «كفم» نام حصار باستاني شهر قم بود و به همين لحاظ عربها اين شهر را قم ناميدند . در زمان حمله عربها به ايران ، قم از توابع اصفهان بود و همزمان با اصفهان فتح گرديد . در سال 24-23 هجري قمري ، ابوموسي اشعري بخشي از سپاه تحت فرماندهي خود را روانه فتح قم نمود و اين شهر در زمان عمر - خليفه دوّم - به دست مسلمين فتح شد . با مهاجرت قبيله اشعري از كوفه به قم و اسكان آنها در اين ناحيه ، قم به تدريج به شهر تبديل شد . بين اعراب اشعري و ساكنان زرتشتي قم پيوسته نزاع و درگيري در ميگرفت كه به شكست قطعي زرتشتيان و تسلط اشعريان مسلمان بر قم منجر شد . در قرون اوّليه اسلام ، علويان با بيرحمانهترين وضع ، تحت آزار و تعقيب حكام عباسي و اموي بودند . در ميان شهرهاي ايران ، قم از مناطق مهمّي بود كه علويان پيوسته به سوي آن هجرت ميكردند . با حضور علويان در قم ، اين شهر به يك شهر علوي نشين تبديل شد . مردم قم ، مأموران را قاتل امام هشتم علي بن موسي الرضا (ع) ميدانستند و به خواهر آن حضرت در قم فوت و مدفون است عشق ميورزيدند و لذا با حكومت آن ناسازگاري ميكردند و خراج نميپرداختند . مأمون ، «علي بن هشام» را با لشكر نيرومند به سوي شهر قم روانه كرد كه به قتل عام مردم و تخريب شهر منجر شد . مردم قم پس از شنيدن خبر فوت مأمون دست به شورش زدند و با هجوم به دار الحكومه در سال 216 ه.ق عامل خليفه را از شهر بيرون كردند . پس از مأمون ، معتصم به خلافت رسيد و سپاهي را براي دفع شورش به قم روانه كرد . اين سپاه نيز شهر را به آتش كشيد . بعد از اين سركوبي ، «محمدبن عيسي بادغيسي» به حكومت قم گماشته شد . اين شخص سياست آرامش با مردم را در پيش گرفت . با روي كار آمدن متوكل عباسي سياست ضد علوي تشديد شد و مردم قم نيز به حمايت از «حسين كوكبي» شتافتند تا دولت علوي در محدوده طالقان ، قزوين ، زنجان و ابهر توسط وي تشكيل شود . پس از متوكل ، معتمد خليفه عباسي ، «موسي بن بغا» را مأمور نمود تا هم حسين كوكبي را سركوب كند و هم طغيان قم را فرو نشاند و مردم از ظلم و ستم خلفا و عاملان آنها به امام يازدهم امام حسن عسكري (ع) توسل جستند . به طور كلي شورش و سركوب مداوم مردم قم تا زمان به قدرت رسيدن آل بويه كه خود از علويان بودند ، ادامه يافت . در دوران اين سلسله ، شهر قم در ابعاد مختلف رشد و توسعه يافت . در دوره سلجوقيان تصدي امور مهّم سلجوقي توسط فرزانگان قمي ، در عمران و ترقي شهر قم مؤثر شد . در حمله مغول شهر قم به كلي منهدم شد ولي پس از گرايش بعضي از حكام به اسلام مانند "سلطان محمد اولجايتو" شهر قم مورد توجه قرار گرفت . اين شهر در دهههاي پاياني قرن هشتم ه.ق مورد تهاجم "تيمور گوركاني" قرار گرفت و مردم شهر قتل عام شدند . مقارن ظهور حكومت خاندانهاي "قراقويونلو" و "آق قويونلو" و به ويژه در دوره صفويان قم مورد توجه قرار گرفت و به تدريج رو به شكوفايي نهاد . قم در سال909 ه.ق از مراكز مهّم فرهنگي و فقهي شيعه گرديد و علماي بزرگي در اين شهر كرسي تدريس و تحقيق بنا نهادند و اهميّت زيارتي و مذهبي اين شهر فزوني يافت . در حمله افغانها ، شهر قم خسارات سنگيني را متحمل شد و مردم قم نيز از نظر اقتصادي تحت فشار شديدي قرار گرفتند . در دوره نادر شاه افشار نيز شهر قم متحمل خسارات فراوان شد و همچنين زماني كه خاندانهاي زند و قاجار براي تسلط بر ايران با يكديگر جدال ميكردند ، شهر و مردم قم آسيب فراوان ديدند . در سال 1208 هجري قمري ، قم تحت تسلط آغا محمّدخان قاجار در آمد . فتحعلي شاه پس از پيروزي بر دشمنان ، به مرمت حرم و بارگاه حضرت معصومه (س) پرداخت . وي نذر كرده بود كه اگر بر دشمنان پيروز شود به عمران بارگاه آن حضرت بپردازد . در سال 1294 هجري شمسي ، هنگامي كه قشون روس وارد كرج شد ، بسياري از مردم تهران به قم مهاجرت كردند و موضوع انتقال پايتخت به قم نيز مطرح گرديد ، ولي سفارت خانههاي روسيه و انگليس با تحت فشار قرار دادن احمدشاه ، طرح انتقال پايتخت را خنثي كردند . در همين زمان ، توسط مهاجرين قم ، «كميته دفاع ملي» براي دفاع از ميهن تشكيل شد . بدين ترتيب اين شهر به يك مركز سياسي و نظامي عليه روس و انگليس تبديل شد ، ولي پس از درگيريهاي متعددي ، در سال 1294 هجري شمسي به اشغال نيروهاي روس درآمد . در حال حاضر ، قم يكي از مراكز مهّم تشيع ايران و جهان است . وجود بارگاه با عظمت حضرت معصومه (س) و حوزه علميه قم اهميت مذهبي اين شهر را بيش از پيش فزوني بخشيده و حوزههاي علمي و آموزشي آن نيز توسعه يافته است . استان قم از نظر آب و هوا ، اقليم نيمه بياباني دارد و ميزان بارش سالانه آن در اطراف حوض سلطان كمتر از 100 ميلي متر است كه عمدتاً در فصول سرد سال (پاييز و زمستان) صورت ميگيرد . در حالي كه در فصول گرم به ويژه تابستان ، نزولات جوي آن بسيار نادر است . طبق گزارش ايستگاههاي سينوپتيك استان در سال 1373 ، بيشترين درجه حرارت ثبت شده با ۶/31 درجه به مرداد ماه و كمترين آن با 2/۵ درجه سانتيگراد به دي ماه مربوط است . همچنين ماههاي ارديبهشت ، خرداد ، شهريور و مهر مناسبترين زمان براي مسافرت به استان است .
