Cell Phone Ringtone Download Scam: How It Works
You receive a text message inviting you to download a new ringtone. It could be a fashionable theme song or a tone tailored to recent world events, such as a famous quote, sound, or modern catchy beat. Alternatively, you might be invited to call a toll-free telephone number to get the tone.
In both situations, the download requires a credit card. Let’s just say you really want that tone and don’t mind paying the $2.99 price. Little do you know that you will start being silently charged a high fee every month, as a membership you knew nothing about when you got the text. By giving them your credit card number and clicking ‘Pay’ you involuntarily accepted the terms, aka the ‘enrollment in the program’.
It will be almost impossible to get your money back.
Cell Phone Ringtone Download Scam: How To Avoid
Unless you know who the provider of the ringtone is, never download the file. You might end up accumulating a $35 charge on your next phone bill. Always download ringtones from reputable companies.
Read reviews online before you proceed, ask your friends on social media platforms about their recommendations, or simply type the name of the service in a search engine and add the word ‘scam’ at the end. You might be surprised by what could come up.
