Getting Calls From South Sudan? Don’t Ring or Text Back

South Sudan Call Scam: How It Works

This week you may receive a call from a South Sudan area code number that starts with +211. Mobile phones worldwide have been ringing these days being called by automated software that targets people willing to call or text back. The scam is very similar to the one occurred not too long ago, when recipients received the same kind of calls, but from Tonga and occasionally Mauritania. How do they work? Those who call or text back to the numbers on their display fall victims to the Premium Line scam. What is that?

Watch the video below to see in action how this sneaky premium line works:

Criminals also use the same deceiving practice in other related scams such as the Credit Card Lower Rate, Customer Appreciation Call or the One-Ring Call, even going around these days. Here is how it works:

The phone rings once or until the victim picks up. At that moment, the call ends. What scammers are trying to accomplish is the victims to call or text back. When they do, little do they know that the line is a Premium (a hotline typically used for the sex conversations), leading to a very hefty charge on their phone bill.

The crooks are not necessarily from South Sudan but are using a pre-bought hotline that is registered there.
