Acorns Account Locked Scam?

Did you just get an email with the subject line “Acorns account locked”?  Or “Your Acorns Account Has Been Locked”? You are not alone. There is some craziness happening right now amongst the Acorns users after an email just made thousands of people suspecting a scam while looking for the real Acorns Customer Service number. What just happened – or it is one of those prevalent email scams?

The potential Acorns scam involves an email sent to all the members just a few minutes ago, splitting them between all those who are convinced this is a data breach and those just hoping for a simple phishing-attempt joke.

The Acorns support number has been off the hook after this email, screenshot below:

Acorns Customer Service Number Dilemma

The content states:

“Subject: Your Acorns Account Has Been Locked”

“Hi investor, we hope you are safe and doing well. We recently discovered unusual activity with your Acorns account. For your security, we have temporarily locked your account to prevent potential fraud.”

“To unlock your account, please give us a call at 866-221-3560 between 5:00 am – 7:00 pm PST, Monday – Friday, so that we can verify that your account is secure.:

“Please ignore this message if you have already contacted us regarding this matter. Thank you for being an investor with Acorns. It’s our honor to help you grow your oak!”

Acorns Support Is Unresponsive

This potential Acorn scam or breach could even become more viral as some of the most influential investors in this business are Ashton Kutcher, Jennifer Lopez, and Kevin Durant.

As a result of this suspicious email sent today, several people tried to reach out to the Acorns Customer Service number listed on the email, but with no success.

866-221-3560 or 855-739-2859?

The issue was taken to social media, Twitter exploding in the last couple of hours about the potential Acorns Account Locked Scam. Acorns’ phone number listed on the email doesn’t seem to be the same shown on a regular Google search, which is 855-739-2859. Therefore, so many people are convinced this is a data breach and are waiting to see what happens.

Here is what user @kblanc760 just posted on Twitter: “I just went under their website and Google there frequently asked questions and it says that the email that everybody received was an error and that your account is fine. I can’t get through to any numbers either to verify, but this is at least what I’ve seen thus far.”

However, popular user @AndrewCouts says: “Acorns is having some technical issue that caused it to indiscriminately email users telling them their accounts have been locked due to unusual activity.” On the other hand, @marcylynn82 informs that: “I just got a follow-up email saying the 1st one was sent in error. I think everyone rushing to check their accounts has caused it to crash because I get a blank page when I sign in.”

UPDATE:

The @Acorns official account announced: “If you recently received an email regarding your account lock, the email that you received was sent in error, and your Acorns account is secure and should not be locked.” However, users don’t believe it. Here is what @RenatoPRBarbosa just posted:

“If this was the truth, I wouldn’t be locked out. If this was true, my Acorns Early wouldn’t have disappeared the last time I was able to access the app 30 min ago. It’s just GONE as if I never had set it up! We are not stupid. Something bigger than an accident has happened.”
