Calls From Tonga – Do Not Ring or Text Back
How The Tonga Call Scam Works:
Have you been receiving calls from a Tonga area code? The numbers start with (676) 848—-. Thousands of phones have been ringing these days everywhere, being called by automated software that targets people willing to call or text back (learn how to stop scam calls here). Those who reply in any way, fall victim this way to the Premium Line scam. What is the Premium Line trap?

The phone rings once, or until the victim picks up. At that moment, the call ends. What scammers want are the victims to call back or text, which leads to a very hefty charge on their phone bill.
Criminals even called the Scam Detector phone, twice in two days (see image above), using numbers such as (676) 848-9389 or (676) 848-9334. They even rang USA Today reporter John Borja, from the number (676) 848-9003.
How To Avoid The Tonga Call Scam:
It’s easy. Don’t answer or call back numbers you don’t know. If someone is trying to reach you, they will leave a message. As a measure of precaution, feel free to keep updated with the newest reports by checking the Better Business Bureau‘s website regularly.
