Dating scams have been around for a very long time. However, the internet has made things worse. It made these scams more widespread. And then came artificial intelligence (AI). Now, these dating scams are not just everywhere – they’re also super-believable.
Using AI, scammers can create hyper-realistic dating profiles that can trick just about anyone. This guide is here to help you see the truth before getting too invested. These five signs can tell you that you’re likely looking at an AI-generated image on a dating app.

#1 – The Lines Are Too Clean
AI image generators – especially the less advanced ones – usually struggle with finer details. That’s why they create overly smooth lines, especially around the face or hair. These lines give the image a weirdly polished look. A look that suggests the image might be created from scratch.
#2 – The Facial Features Are Too Perfect
Many people touch up their images before posting them online. This isn’t exactly a groundbreaking discovery. Apps like Facetune and FaceApp can smooth your skin, remove your eye bags, and get rid of those annoying pimples. But unless you edit your photo to the point of making yourself look like a cartoon, there’s usually still a natural look to the image. You can spot an imperfection here and there. With AI-generated images, there are no imperfections. These images usually feature no wrinkles, blemishes, or even pores. And this kind of perfection just doesn’t exist.
#3 – The Facial Features Are Too Consistent
Less advanced AI generators will likely create images of different people with similar facial features. This can help you tell they’re fake.
However, there are numerous generators like Remini that enhance images of the same person. And these generators are the problem. That is, of course, if you don’t know what to look for.
You see, the features these generators create are too uniform. Different images might include different lighting, angle, or expression. But the facial features remain exactly the same. Of course, this isn’t how real photos work. Otherwise, no one would look for perfect lighting or give their “good side” before taking a photo.

#4 – The Background Is Off
Images on dating apps can sometimes focus only on the face. This can be a red flag in and of itself. However, you should also look for at least one image with background. Both scammers and AI generators treat the background as less important, so this might be where mistakes are most noticeable.
Now, a lot of things can be wrong with the background of an AI-generated image. Here are just a few examples:
- The background is too uniform.
- The lighting is unnatural.
- There are numerous blurry spots.
- The background contains misplaced shapes.
#5 – The Image Lacks Cohesion
This tell-tale sign might surprise you, given that this guide has described AI-generated images as “too perfect.” However, AI-generated images will only look flawless at first glance. As you start closely inspecting them, you’ll notice that they lack cohesion. The person in front might not be fully integrated with the background or their shadow might not match. They can even have mismatched jewelry. Even a small inconsistency can help you have your “Eureka!” moment.
