thredup.com Review

The Scam Detector website Validator gives thredup.com a fairly high trust score on the platform: 81.8. It signals that the business is best defined by the following tags: Fair. Valid. Known.. We are confident about our score as we also partner with other high-tech, fraud-prevention companies that found the same issues. So, why this score? We came up with the 81.8 score based on 53 aggregated factors relevant to thredup.com's industry. The algorithm detected a low risk for activity related to phishing, spamming, and other factors noted in the Fair. Valid. Known. tags above. Long story short, we deemed this a known website, with a low scam probability. But let's explain in more detail.

Explaining Our Analytical Approach

We've displayed some important information within the Company Details section above, each deserving more explanation:

  • Proximity to Suspicious Websites
  • Threat Profile
  • Phishing Profile
  • Malware Score
  • Spam Score
  • Domain Blacklist Status
  • HTTPS connection
  • Domain Creation Date

While some are self-explanatory concerning thredup.com, let's look closer at the remaining ones.

Proximity to Potentially Harmful Websites

This metric gauges the connection, scored on a scale of 1 to 100, between thredup.com and websites marked as suspicious. Elevated scores point to a stronger link with these questionable online destinations. It's worth noting that website owners might not always be aware of their site's proximity to these dubious platforms or servers. However, a "Proximity to Suspicious Websites" score surpassing 80 strongly indicates a high-risk website, while a score below 30 signifies a less-threatening site.

Risk Factors: Threat, Phishing, Malware, and Spam

These indicators reveal the vulnerabilities and elements embedded within the HTML code of thredup.com. They become especially pertinent if the website has received reports from internet users who've encountered unsolicited emails, ads, or messages related to the site. In the context of thredup.com, our investigation continues working to pinpoint the specific category, but we welcome your insights in the comments below. A high Malware score generally implies the presence of suspicious code that might be unknowingly disseminated. Conversely, a high Spam score hints at a possibly spam-ridden email address associated with the business. Scores under 30 in both categories are reassuring, but any score surpassing this threshold should raise concerns. thredup.com is an innocuous suspicious website, given all the risk factors and data numbers analyzed in this in-depth review. Share your experience in the comments.

Domain Blacklisting Status

This term indicates whether thredup.com has landed on any online directories' blacklists and earned a suspicious tag.

Assessing HTTPS Connectivity

This section provides insight into whether thredup.com boasts an 's' at the end of the 'HTTP' protocol listed in your browser's address bar. If the tab displays in green, consider it a positive sign.

Safe Check

We want our trust scores and reviews to be as accurate as possible so that you can protect yourself from online fraud. Our algorithm aggregates factors that efficiently analyze a company's website, in this case, thredup.com.

I wish l had looked at the reviews before placing my order. I received the wrong size. It said medium, l got a petite small. I reordered it, once again thinking l would get a medium and instead got a petite medium. Their website customer service is a JOKE. I wontbe wasting my time with them. They are definitely a scam company!!
I realized something today. Theup would send me emails several times a week. Sometimes a day. I’ve been a loyal customer for many years. They use to be good. NOT anymore!!! I sent a bad review on 09/23/24.Don’t receive any emails from them anymore. Guess customer service does get your emails when it suits them 😂
I sent five bags of clothing to Thred Up which they received on May 31, 2024. As of today , October 20th they have processed and listed only one bag and have discounted my items to a point where it wasn’t worth the trip to the post office to send these items. This is a scam. I will donate clothing before I ever send them another thing. I’d be happy to retract this if the company did the right thing but right now I feel very much taken.
I have never sold to thread up until recently. It sounded like a good idea, I had to pay to send my items to them $15, at the time it made sense. There is no indication beforehand how much payout I would get. They are total crooks. I understand things have to be done a certain way for them to make money, but this is outrageous. I will never use them again. I would rather take it to my local thrift store or Goodwill.
Pretty much think it should be acknowledged that you are paying ThredUp to donate your clothing to them. Next time I will donate my clothes to the local thrift shop.
Do not sale items to ThredUp! The clean out process has taken over 3 months and the date just keeps being pushed back. Very disappointed with this process and a waste of time. Next time I will use the local resale options instead.
I wish I had read the reviews here before deciding to try to sell clothes on thredUP! Like many others have reported, I have had fine experiences buying clothes from them. However, when it came to selling, it was a total rip-off. The descriptions/titles and subsequent prices they created for the items I sent them were wrong for many items (i.e., calling a nice pair of pants "sweatpants" and putting a price of $5 on them), and it was really difficult or impossible to change because you can basically only interact with a chat bot, not really people. Then, in addition to the $15 clean-out bag fee, I paid an extra $10 to supposedly be able to get my clothes back if they didn't sell, but then thredUP would have charged me a ridiculously high additional per-item fee if I wanted to get anything back, so it wasn't worth it. In the end, only 3 of my items sold in 30 days, and I ended up PAYING them to take my clothes, which they may later sell and keep all the profits for. I wish I had just donated them to a local charity. What a rip-off! I won't even be buying clothes from thredUP anymore after this experience.
Send the 30 items they show 12 items for sale and then they sell your other items so you are cut out of the profit. Horrible business! Hopefully they go out of business for being thieves!
I’ve been very disappointed at the clothing I have received. When I requested a size 12. The clothes that arrive are so darn small. This it is discouraging to say the least. I’ve given jeans away to a friend who wears an 8 and they are tight. To have or donate to Goodwill. They offer a credit or you have to pay to return them. It’s my last purchase, I will make on this site.
I bought 2 pair of jeans, same size, 1 fits great, the other I can"t get over my hips, so much smaller than the other pair. I don't want them, I want my money back! I have sent messages 4 times and have never heard back from thread up .Don't buy from them! What a lousy company!!
I really wish I would have read these reviews prior to buying into ThreadUp's clean-out pitch, and I really wish I could give them the negative stars they deserve. I sent in 11 high end dressed, some with tags on. At the time I requested the clean out bag (over 3 months ago) they 'waived' the $14.99 fee but I just noticed I'll now be paying out $14.99 on the back end, which I think its pretty scammy and I don't even think I'm going to make $14.99 off these items. I agree with a number of the reviews, the $1-$2 bucks I'll maybe receive per item IF they sell is 100% NOT worth it. I was going to donate the dresses to the local DV agency resale store, but a well place thread-up commercial made me think I could make some money. Boy was I wrong! I am now more than ashamed of myself for not just donating the dresses to a non-profit that could have done good with the sale money. DO NOT send your clothes to these folks. Absolutely terrible.
If I could give zero stars.. I would. Bought from this company and thought I’d sell. I ordered 2 bags and filled them so full of nice designer jeans and clothing. They only posted 8 pieces of clothing out of 50. Gave me Pennie’s on the dollar. 4 dollars for a polo dress that was like new! I will not buy because I’d feel I was stealing from others like they stole from me. This company needs to be taken out of business!
They kept my items almost 6 wks before they posted them, they mis-identified one Eileen Fisher silk pants as maternity and they are NOT. They lost the jersey pants that go with a jersey top, (a beautiful matched set) and never posted the pants as a set, I guess they lost them. When I pointed this out they did not care. If you ask questions they ignore you. This was the worst experience I have ever had with a consignment service. Don’t do it!
Normally, I have no issues buying clothes from ThredUP. However, this time with my order, I had two dresses that came without belts and one came with the seam ripping apart at the chest (which was not shown in the picture). I am quite disappointed because I always buy from them (a loyal customer) and this is the first time this has happened. Just be super careful when looking at the pictures.
Used to be an alright site to buy and sell but now the bags cost $15 and each unsold item costs $6 to reclaim. Basically they are keeping all your profits. With my last bag, after their current fee structure, I didn't receive a penny of my sales. No longer feasible to use them.
I failed to read reviews before sending my items to Thredup. Everyone was absolutely 100% correct! They are a rip off and steal your expensive items and the payback is ridiculous. They profit off you BIG TIME! So do yourself a favor and work work your local consignment instead!
I love ThredUp. I wish they used better shipping companies, but I’ve found the best second hand items for so little and used it for gifts, too. It makes me feel good about using gently loved items that might end up in a landfill otherwise, and many items that are like new or still with the tags on. I once got a dress for a film premier that was around $360 new for maybe $45. I love them so much, I have to hide the app on my phone so I don’t click on it! :]
O stars. I sent over 50 pieces of carefully inspected clothing items, which everything complied with their rules. No stains, tears, discoloration, etc, all tags were attached... everything in almost perfect order. First off, between the initial cost and the payout amount, it's almost laughable. My first cleanout bag had 33 pieces of clothing, which I took photos of each piece, mainly because I did not want to buy my own items back. Anyway, of the 33 pieces, only 17 pcs. were accounted for by them. 16 pcs just disappeared into thin air. I've contacted Thred Up several times and the answer I get is someone talking in circles. Never, ever again will I send them anything.
I thought robbery was illegal but this company gets away with it. Buy from them but never be tempted by the ease of throwing your unwanted clothes in a clean out bag. They will pay you one dollar for your item and sell it for $25 or more. They will charge you for shipping too so you may end up owing them money after they’ve taken your clothes. I don’t know how their shares haven’t tanked. It will collapse when thredups reputation catch’s up with it.
an honest to god ripoff and completely unethical business. has tried multiple times to sell items of mine worth at least $100 for $10, don't ever bring your clothes to them or trust them.

“False advertising”

I bought 4 items, 3 were on "final sale", meaning no returns/refunds. Three items were listed as in excellent condition. One item was listed as "very good condition" (minor wear on fabric). Only one of the items was even in "good condition" (lots of wear no major defect), two were in poor condition with snags and holes and excessive sweater pilling. One of the items was 4 sizes off of the listing. I attempted to make a return but final sale items aren't returnable. I chatted with customer service and threatened to get my credit card company involved. They refunded me all the items but I still had to pay shipping. Never again. Tip for consumers:inaccurate clothing condition listed for all items I ordered. Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

“Zero Stars. Do NOT sell with them. Waste of time and money.”

I sent in 4 boxes of brand new tags attached, clothes and shoes. Didn't make any money at all. I literally paid for them to take my things and they didn't send back the things they wouldn't take. DO NOT SELL WITH THEM! You will not get any money but they will take yours! Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

“SCAM”

*Zero Stars: Deceptive, Unprofessional, and Exploitative - Avoid at All Costs* I'm writing this review as a warning to others: stay far, far away from ThredUp SELLING YOUR ITEMS. My experience with this company was an unmitigated disaster, marked by deceit, incompetence, and a blatant disregard for ethical business practices. I have picture proof of what I'be send in and in what condition. Customer service claims a pair of designer shoes to be fake and another pair to have been excessively worn when they're were in fact new. Items supposedly disposed of so no way of getting them back! I suspect them to be listed at a later date for their benefit without getting my (already ridiculously low) cut! What a great SCAM/FRAUD they created with no accountability or repercussions! Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

“Don't waste your time”

I have bought and sold on ThredUp several times, but I'm done. Too many times I've sent brand new items they have deemed "ineligible for earnings," which means they'll still sell them, but I will get no commission. How they decide this, no idea because they still put a decent price on these items. Another time I sent in a pants and top set. Very unique design, obviously a set. They listed just the pants - shirt nowhere to be found. Takes months to process a clean out bag, fees are outrageous, sellers earn pennies (if that) and now they're discontinuing their points / rewards program. There's nothing that makes selling on ThredUp worth it. Donate to a local charity instead. Service Value Shipping Quality

“Horrible service and delivery time”

I ordered four pairs of jeans for my wife for her birthday which she really liked. I ordered them on the 12th of this month. I was told that I would have them by the 18th. 18th had come and gone then was told by this Saturday the 23, and on the 23rd they change the date to this Monday the 25th mind you by now my wife's birthday has come and gone and I had to stop at other places for what she wanted it is now 8:42 and according to UPS they don't even have a tracking for me because none of the information is given to you by thredUP has the right tracking number. I've continuously tried to get a hold of them and all I can get in touch with is their automated system then they tell me in 4 minutes somebody will get a hold of me in a few minutes 4 minutes I've tried for 90 minutes so far messaging and waiting. I want to cancel my order but yet they're not giving me an option to even do that. I honestly feel like I should be reimbursed for the amount of money that I spent there and some of the money that I spent for her birthday due to the fact that they continuously do not get anything right or on time. I definitely will not be shopping with them again nor will my wife or her friends and I really recommend to everybody else if you want it at the time it says it's going to be delivered and you need it then DO NOT BOTHER! I have had many sites that my wife uses and none of them have had issues like this there's always somebody you can speak to and they get it resolved right away if there was a slight issue. Well tracking it it hasn't moved an inch today and it's literally an hour and a half from where I live its been at the same spot all day, even at the last time I just looked. My word of advice is stay away unless you're really in love with something check other sites for it if you can. And if you are really in love with something then make sure to order it oh probably a month before you actually will need it

“RIP OFF”

Ordered a purse from thredUp which was described to be in "excellent" condition. When I received the purse, not only were there several loose threads (it is a fabric purse with embroidery) but the zipper was broken. Definitely not my idea of excellent. I went online to find out what I should do because I still wanted the purse, but I was not happy with the condition. ThredUp gave me three options: credit for about 40% of what I paid, 35% off my next order or free shipping on my next order. So I chose the credit thinking it meant they would credit it to my credit card. No, they meant store credit. I didn't realize this until after I had made my selection. So basically they wanted me to spend more money instead of actually resolving my issue which was their fault in the first place. I got on online chat with thredUp's customer service and long story short, they refused to credit my credit card and insisted I had to either return the purse or accept one of their other "offers". I kept pointing out that it was their fault for misrepresenting the condition of the purse, but it didn't make any difference. I ended up disputing the charge on my credit card and getting the entire purchase price credited. And I got to keep the purse. ThredUp's loss because I had no issue with paying for the purse at a discounted price, but they refused to credit my card. So now they are out of a sale and a purse. Tip for consumers:They are not straight forward when it comes to their item descriptions. Products used:purse Service Value Shipping Quality

“Do not sell on THREADUP”

I made the mistake of trusting this company because it's promoted by MADEWELL, and completely regret it I sent in expensive designer jackets that's I wasn't able to sell in another consignment store in my town and they never told me when the due date was for my items, they only sent me 1 updated detail on the 3 bags I sent in with clothes. And usually if they don't sell these items you can get them back but because I was never updated on the bags I sent in I never knew when the due date was I could never get in contact to make sure they would send back my items. It's imposible to get a hold of anyone to track anything down. Long story short I lost about $1000 and made a profit of $5 go anywhere but THREADUP to sell. Absolute bull$#*!. They are stealing from people. Tip for consumers:No Products used:I sold things on there Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

“Do NOT sell on this site.”

I've sent in 120lbs. Of NWT and/or excellent condition items (Lilly Pulitzer, Michael Kors, etc.) and only made $350 of that thousands and thousands worth of clothes. Some of the NWT items were not listed as such (affecting the price/value). SO many items that they clearly sold (some of which were sold for over $20/each) were not eligible for payment. “Do Not Send Anything That You Were NOT ALREADY BRINGING TO GOODWILL”

They put your items up for sale immediately after they go live on the website. They also lose items and do not respond to emails regarding their mistakes. They used to be a great site, but each year they go downhill a little more by not being transparent about changes being made to cleanout process. And you will never actually speak to a customer service representative. The only reason I gave 2 stars is because its not a bad site for PURCHASING items. But to sell items its ABSOLUTELY Horrible, Horrible, Horrible. Tip for consumers:The watch needed a new battery, so they dont even know if they are selling a broken watch or not Products used:A Watch that I purchased on their website Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

“Shipping and restocking fees are a rip off”

With $11 shipping fees with each order the costs add up quickly. Return shipping is $11 if you want a refund to paypal plus $4 restocking fees for each returned item. I made 11 separate purchases and lost $121 in shipping fees alone plus $32 restocking fees for returning 8 items. Thredup is a rip off!

“Claimed my clothes had an odor”

I was overall very pleased with the clothes I received but when I sent in the bag of my own clothes to sell, after 8 weeks of processing I got an email stating they couldn't use ANY of my clean clothes because of a "strong odor" like perfume, cigarette smoke etc. None of those things are true in my life. In fact, I make extra steps into making sure my clothes are as clean as they can be as I do not have a natural sense of smell. I do not use perfume. I wash my clothes in oxyclean based tide detergent. I do not smoke or even associate with anyone who does. Their accusations were not only unbased, but downright offensive. This company will no longer be getting my business. Products used:capris and a few tops Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

“Dishonest horrible company”

So back in the day when thread up was new they were really good at processing and letting you know why your clothes weren't accepted.back in May I sent them a box with 80-90 items about 10 of them were posted. Mind you I followed the policy and made sure everything I sent was either new with tags or barely used. As well as in trend. They took until now June 17 to process the boxes sent. When I saw the didn't add any items I contracted them and asked as to why. They couldn't tell me a reason as to why also the person on the chat only has its initials not full name. They says no reason needs to be given they just didn't accept them. Told them I want them back mind you this conversation happened one hour after processing he said all of them were recycle. What I think is happening lately is that if you send them nice and cute stuff they will steal it and say it was recycle which in truth I doubt. Don't send them any more clothes I promise they are not honest on how they process. Tip for consumers:I hope that they close down Products used:I sent dresses, jackets, sets, shorts, shoes etc Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

“Do not send clothes”

I will no longer be sending any clothes to Threadup. My last 2 bundles have not earned me anything although they have sold. I would rather donate locally and support a small, local business.

“I believe it's a rip off!”

I sent high quality items, I work and own a consignmet store for over 25yrs. I know labels, I sent only the cream of the crop, Burberry coat, Chico's blazers High end leather purses brand names and in perfect condition. None of them sold except one purse and it's been 2 weeks and still no payout and it's only for 7.00. I thought I'd try it out but never again. It's a total scam, sell quality items on ebay or on your own! This is a very shady business covered by flowery words and false promises.

“Not worth the hassle”

After placing my order on June 5,2024 the order shipped on June 9,2024. The tracking hasn't updated since June 14,2024 and today is June 22,2024. I reached out to customer service via chat on June 20 and after waiting over 45 minutes to get to talk with someone, was told she would email FedEx and email me when there was an update. She emailed me today and said she was still working on it and to please let her know if it was received. I told her that FedEx has given me four different scheduled delivery dates at this point and the tracking status still hasn't updated and asked if I could please be refunded. I was told it has to be seven BUSINESS days without tracking updating before they will help in that regard. So to ThredUp it's okay to spend hundreds of dollars, their chosen shipping company to not come close to delivering by ThredUp's estimated delivery date, the delivery company to then not update tracking for at least six business days, and THEN you can reach out and expect a refund. All other companies I have dealt with that had tracking not update for over a week, which hasn't happened often, were willing to help and refund the money so I could place another order or not risk being out that much money. After this I will never order from ThredUp again. I know some people think they treat buyers better than sellers, but that's not true in my experience. I would not recommend anyone do business with them. Products used:I haven’t received them. Service Value Shipping

“Still not seen one penny of the few they're paying me!”

I will NEVER use this ripoff place again. Not only are they offering literally pennies for beautiful clothes, I'll never even see one of those pennies. Biggest regret EVER trusting them! Tip for consumers:I'm s Seller who will NEVER use these people again!!! Service Value Shipping

“You should be able to rate this ZERO stars”

This company is a totally fraudulent SCAM. The clean out program? It's shady, it's unethical, it's downright STEALING. I sent in a few items with their free kit. A BRAND new with tags dress from Coach (listed or like $10?) and a few other items I felt should have been listed for more... I also sent in a shirt I had bought from Marshalls (I googled it after this whole situation) and they listed the shirt for $300 but were "discounting" it for $50 (it hasn't sold yet but now it's down to $38...) The whole situation is sketchy. Don't trust them. And save your time. Just donate the clothes or sell on Ebay... Tip for consumers:SCAM! DON'T DO BUSINESS WITH THIS SHOP! Products used:All. My complaint wasn't about the items they're selling. Value Quality

“Stay Away From This Company”

I sent designer apparel to this company, they kill you with fees. If you want to reclaim items, the processing fee alone, will make you feel as if it were not worth it. Save your breath, donate to Good Will, Salvation Army, Church or shelter, and write it off. This place should be investigated by the Attorney General of their State, which I may do, as they are operating loan sharking ring, but with clothing Tip for consumers:Stay away from this business, they will steal your clothing, trust these reviews, trust mine Products used:None Service Value Shipping Returns Quality

“Highway Robbery”

My ThredUp payout after selling 20+ items -- including quality brands like Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, White Houes Black Market, and J. Crew -- was a whopping $1.56, and it took nearly half a YEAR for them to process these donations. (I won't call them sales, because it's essentially a donation.) You can see in the photos how much money these items were sold for versus how much I received in payout too. What a silly waste of my time and effort. I would have been better off just donating them to a women's shelter or taking them to a local Goodwill so that my donations could have at least helped someone in need rather than someone in greed. How is this business still a business? Products used:I used their consignment service for sellers.

“Everyone needs to know, they're sharks”

Absolutely horrific business practices now. Previously consigned with them years ago and had problems but nothing like this, you'd be lucky to make 5%-10% of your items worth. Please just go to your local consignment shop. It takes over a month for them to even look at your items and they no longer offer a way of reclaiming them if you've changed your mind. There are so many better options than them.

“THEY STEAL YOUR MONEY AND CREDIT”

I had a credit in my account because I had been waiting over a year for another clean out bag to be posted. I just went to check and all of my money (credit) was gone. They said in chat that it rolls into a gift card. Complete fraud. I was never contacted that this was even a possibility. They still have not posted had my last clean out bag that I paid to receive from well over a year ago. Do not trust them. Products used:I’m done with thred up

“Just so so and now FedEx has lost my most recent package.”

My first three orders were so so. Some items were better than they appeared and others like the pants appeared to be dress pants; however, when they arrived they looked more like joggers. I'm very disappointed in my last order because I chose to bundle two orders totalling over 150 dollars and FedEx lost the package last week. They told me to contact thredup for a refund and thredup chat keeps showing not available after waiting for a representative for almost an hour. Not terribly impressed at the moment. Products used:Pants, shirts, and one jacket. Unfortunately my cute jackets and scarves that I paid for FedEx lost.

“Not Customer Friendly!”

ThredUp has a few merits and several negatives. Handbags especially are grossly overpriced. They make contacting them so difficult that you want to give up. Shipping is the pits, much too slow, unreliable thru FedEx/UPS. When I started three years ago, the company was spot on. Now they make buying a headache.

“Very happy with my handbag purchase”

(This is based on one purchase.) I recently stumbled on ThredUp from an ad on an article I was reading. I'd never heard of them before, but I knew I was looking for a black leather crossbody bag to replace my well-loved and worn out The Sak purse I'd been using for years. I was really careful defining my search parameters and only looked at bags with excellent reviews. I didn't want to pay over $45 in case I was really unhappy with the experience. I eventually settled on a Cole Hann bag with an original price of $250 that was listing for $36.50. The purse arrived two days ago and after a close inspection, I am VERY happy with it. There are no obvious defects to the leather. There is an issue with the zipper, but I've had the same issue in other bags and it's not really a problem. So I will shop there again. I'll probably limit it to accessories since I can't imagine trying to get clothes online since I can be very hard to fit, but for certain items, this place is a gold mine. “Excellent Quality Items were Excellent!”

So I cannot speak as to selling my clothes through this company but when it comes to making a purchase I ordered all excellent items and that is exactly what I received! I needed a couple of Calvin Klein blazers and Ann Taylor work dresses and I made sure to order the excellent quality that says it comes brand new and that's exactly how the material came! Completely true to description. The only thing I will say is I did not read the description for a final sale item so I did not know the material before purchasing, but everything else was perfect! Ordered 6 items and keeping all 6 items! The packaging was also so cute and I ordered everything 8 days ago and it came pretty fast for standard shipping!

How To Remove Your Information From the Internet

Whether you like it or not, unfortunately, the Internet has all your personal information stored. How did that happen? Every time you visit a simple site and accept cookies, consent to their forms, or download an app, unscrupulous data brokers collect not just your phone number, name, AND address. They also sell this to third parties, which creates a $1 billion industry a year. Your collected personal data is used by buyers to send you never-ending spam emails, targeted ads, and, of course, telemarketing calls. Crooks use all your data without remorse.

We can help. Many people have asked us about how to remove your personal information from the Internet. If you want your data deleted entirely from the online world, contact our official partners at Incogni immediately. This legitimate data privacy tool works on your behalf to officially require a ton of online brokers to remove your data.
