lichess.org Review
The Scam Detector website Validator gives lichess.org the absolute highest trust score on the platform: 100. It signals that the business is best defined by the following tags: Safe. Secure. . We are confident about our score as we also partner with other high-tech, fraud-prevention companies that found the same issues. So, why this very high score? We came up with the 100 score based on 53 aggregated factors relevant to lichess.org's industry. The algorithm detected no high-risk activity related to phishing, spamming, and other factors, as noted in the Safe. Secure. tags above. Long story short, we label this website as secure and trustworthy. We explain this in more detail below.
Explaining Our Analytical Approach
We've displayed some important information within the Company Details section above, each deserving more explanation:
- Proximity to Suspicious Websites
- Threat Profile
- Phishing Profile
- Malware Score
- Spam Score
- Domain Blacklist Status
- HTTPS connection
- Domain Creation Date
While some are self-explanatory concerning lichess.org, let's dive deeper into the remaining ones.
Proximity to Potentially Harmful Websites
This metric gauges the connection, scored on a scale of 1 to 100, between lichess.org and websites marked as suspicious. Elevated scores point to a stronger link with these questionable online destinations. It's worth noting that website owners might not always be aware of their site's proximity to these dubious platforms or servers. However, a "Proximity to Suspicious Websites" score surpassing 80 strongly indicates a high-risk website, while a score below 30 signifies a less-threatening site.
Risk Factors: Threat, Phishing, Malware, and Spam
These indicators reveal the vulnerabilities and elements embedded within the HTML code of lichess.org. They become especially pertinent if the website has received reports from internet users who've encountered unsolicited emails, ads, or messages related to the site. In the context of lichess.org, our investigation continues working to pinpoint the specific category, but we welcome your insights in the comments below. A high Malware score generally implies the presence of suspicious code that might be unknowingly disseminated. Conversely, a high Spam score hints at a possibly spam-ridden email address associated with the business. Scores under 30 in both categories are reassuring, but any score surpassing this threshold should raise concerns. lichess.org is a secure website, given all the risk factors and data numbers analyzed in this in-depth review. Share your experience in the comments.
Domain Blacklisting Status
This term indicates whether lichess.org has landed on any online directories' blacklists and earned a suspicious tag.
Assessing HTTPS Connectivity
This section provides insight into whether lichess.org boasts an 's' at the end of the 'HTTP' protocol listed in your browser's address bar. If the tab displays in green, consider it a positive sign.
Safe Check
We want our trust scores and reviews to be as accurate as possible so that you can protect yourself from online fraud. Our algorithm aggregates factors that efficiently analyze a company's website, in this case, lichess.org.

- Score: 2.8
Site full of bots and cheaters. I hadn't played for 2 months on lichess, and i came back to play 2 blitz games:in the first my opponent played with 97% accuracy on 41 moves,in the second my opponent played with 99% on 39 moves!Impossible to play chess online now.
There is a bug in their soft: every time when a player aborts a game with an opponent with a far too big difference in rating, this player get punished with ever longer timeout. In this way players are punished for the poor pairing due to the site shortcomings. And this is going on and on inspite of all the complaints.
How to play cheaters on LiChess. Join, apply for an account and play. Congratulations, you are playing scumbag, cheater, prog user, dirt bag, low life, people who cheats for chess points.
They blocked my account because I managed to reach an accuracy of over 90% from time to time. Apparently, it’s forbidden on Lichess.org to play good chess and be successful. Be careful! As soon as you hit over 90% accuracy, your account will be blocked!
It's free, and ad-free. Can't ask for more.
The recent Lichess Spring 2024 marathon was a real joy to play in, and I even streamed it live on twitch. In general the site is super fast, efficient, well constructed, and seems to have far bigger events in general than anywhere else on the Internet. I have been a recurring donor for years and recommend everyone to donate to this site to help support it! It really deserves all the support it gets! Cheers, K
Do not waste your time with this app. There are so many issues that it would take too long to mention them all. But the platform is definitely manipulated to suit certain players from very large populated countries, like India. Also amazing how many times you get a miss move at a crucial moment in the game !
I cannot believe all the bad reviews here....Lichess is great! Caters to all levels, is very user friendly, is free, no ads, any type of time control or chess variant you could wish for. I've used Lichess since 2020 and have found that other sites/apps suck in comparison.
Highly recommended chess resource for free and no adverts.Great for beginners learning chess and great for more experienced players who can create their own studies and to analyse games as well as checking out openings and endings.Fantastic siteBest not to play random players if you cannot cope with occasionally coming across someone using a chess engine.
Great open-source chess platform. Extremely easy to set up an account and track your progress in different types of game setups. I almost want to say it's "too easy" and therefore quite addictive! There is no paid version so the training features are limited but the engine is very strong and the puzzles training feature is excellent.
This was a good site for online chess until about 6 months ago. An large influx of mentally ill people have overrun the forums so that asking questions or making observations is impossible, now. Mods simply don't care. Noticeable spike in cheating over the same time span, about which nothing is ever done. The site is turning into a virtual sewer. There's no real difference in quality between Lichess and chess.com, now. Both are pretty bad.
Simply astounding how ad-free websites are still out there with the aim not to earn money, but to provide the best chess experience. Lichess lives of donations, which are all spent on its servers, supplying it's users with absolutely free and ad-free chess. Not only can one play games, people can compete in tournaments, use an engine to look at an analysis board, get a rating, import games, analyze games, make and read studies, and do puzzles and other games to improve his chess.
Whenever an attempt is made to find a equal or better player for 2-3 times this site is placing the player on hold for 2 hours as if it is a big crime. No sensitive player likes to play with a low rated player and win a game as it is not at all a win. Also there is no provision to communicate to Lichess for telling any thing. In other aspects it is fairly good.Hope Lichess allows players to choose opponents according to choice.
tried playing what they call chess on the site, game is so poorly programmed a 2/10 game is pretty easy to beat a computer, but 3/10 is a gulf above and a struggle to beatwhy is there noone capable of making online games actually scale up properly and everything is either walking over the computer or it walks over you
Really good platform but the management (or admin or whatever is the name of them) is useless. Reported many situation, no feedback what happened. Many fake account and cheater on that platform.Took off the chat option without reason. Also the players seem just there for having fun not for playing chess, never accept revenge.
full to the brim with cheaters and horrible people in the forums that defend said cheaters. as soon as you start beating them they stop making moves for a while turn on their engine and when they return they play at a GM level.. pathetic site.. do not waste your time..
I won't be long, because I'm going to make a public attack against them in some months. My name is Giancorrado Randone (giancz91 on lichess). I've been banned by lichess for cheating, never did it in my life. Banned after 19000 games and 2088 hours of playing, I was also a donor. All my ratings were consistent with my FIDE ratings (check chessratingcomparison.com). Moderators are arrogant and incompetent, or worse, in bad faith. Contact me on giancz91 if you want to join me in the attack.
I love how lichess is free. its another experience for me. The UI sucks. but you can design it yourself with various extensions or with settings in site. compared with other chess servers, this one has the best cheat detectors.
I play chess a lot and This website offer almost everything you need. When pairing there is always at least 40K people playing so you will find quick match. You can analyse infinite games for free although another websites require payment to do that.Support android and IOS and very easy to use . I like the puzzle also you can play Infinite and try everything for free in this website. What I missed here ?1- When analyzing games you need to add brilliant moves feature.2- design not bad but could be better.
Corruption, boorish attitude of moderators and users. They threw me into a ban supposedly for cheating, in fact I didn't cheat. I do not recommend lichess.org.There are organized band of bullies, that have bullying me for 1 year. The Lichess did nothing with them, but when I responded to their insults, my first account was closed, second was muted and third was marked as ToS violation.

“The worst”
I'm a long-time chess player and this site is horrible. You are playing with bots instead of real people and they ban you for no reason. There are a lot of much better alternatives for my fellow players out there. Please don't waste your time on this garbage, you can do better. Service Value Returns Quality
“Poor analyzing staff on lichess and failing to claim”
My son was trying to login to join tournament on lichess and by mistake he forgot to close the tab and played on other tab. Even though he won first round in tournament lichess claim him for computer assistance which he was not doing. I know this as I was in that room. I can't guide him because I don't know anything of chess. Service Value Returns Quality
“Better and less cluttered than chess.com!”
Free chess with no ads. Where do you find it? Not on chess.com, of course. It is a great platform. Probably the best chess platform on the planet. Very Intuitive and Useful. Ignore the bad reviews. Definitely
“Banned because of my haters”
Corruption, boorish attitude of moderators and users. They threw me into a ban supposedly for cheating, in fact I didn't cheat. I do not recommend lichess.org. https://lichess.org/@/Megarobot, https://lichess.org/@/SergeyVoronChess - bullies, that have bullying me for 1 year. The Lichess did nothing with them, but when I responded to their insults, my first account was closed, second was muted and third was marked as ToS violation.
“Big tech does anything it wants without consequences”
Neither Lichess nor Chess – Play and Learn, aka Chess.com, provide anything close to the service their public relations spin claims they provide. I have screenshots of vicious verbal abuse threatening violence from members of both chess app developers, sent well over 10 screenshots documenting all manner of cheating, game abandoning, delay tactics, and verbal abuse to Google (the attached screenshots are from Lichess, but similar experience comes through Chess.com). I also quoted Google's own policies for software app developers back to Google, documenting point by point the daily violations both companies were engaged in. Google did absolutely nothing but give me the run around for nearly a year. Conclusion? Big tech does exactly what it wants if it means profit, and ignores abuses of many kinds outright, then lies directly to the public with public relations statements that have no relation to their actual practices Tip for consumers:Parents, absolutely do not let your kids use these applications without immediate supervision, and be prepared for your kids to be savagely verbally abused and have big tech, the chess software and Google Play equally, make every excuse possible, deny, delay, ignore the problem. Google Play's denial that they ever received my screenshots came by way of REPLY TO THE SCREENSHOTS, WITH THE SCREENSHOTS ATTACHED TO THEIR DENIAL Service Quality
“Very bad”
Terrible site, very laggy I lost a tournament because of that also, the time given to play the fist move should be increased to like 2 minutes. In a real tournament you don't lose until all you time is drained. However, I must give credit to the unlimited puzzle limit, something that some sites like chess.com don't offer Tip for consumers:no Products used:their chess puzzles and tournaments Service Value Returns Quality
“You don't matter”
If you try and accuse someone of cheating you'll get a sleazy message saying repeating this will result in loss of communication. Which is ironic because I was trying to communicate and you've lost me as a player. Just awful. Zero stars. Service Value Quality
“Bunch of criminals”
Lots of cheating players in another words thieves and criminals. Moderators are exactly the same. Criminals. Account gets timed out for allegedly running down the clock when I'm simply communicating with opponents. What's the purpose of chat then? Absolutely disgraceful. Stay away from those crooks. As law enforcement agent I'll be back with a search warrant.
“Very buggy, and support is non-existent”
Frequently gives out temporary bans for unknown reasons, and the support is non-existent. When I tried to ask a question on its "Q&A", it gave me a bogus message about having to be a user for a week even though my profile says I have over eighteen days of non-stop game time. Then, when I tried to submit an issue on Github, my issues were immediately closed with no explanation! When I reopened them, I was eventually banned from their github, also with no explanation! Stay away from these people!
“Better than chess.com (At least, if played from Europe...)”
Yes, they don't have that much stuff to learn from but the gameplay seems a lot smoother to me. I almost abandoned chess.com (I was a premium member) in favour of lichess and honestly I don't regret. If you happen to play chess more or less seriously, give it a try.
“Cheat detection produces false positives & you get banned - Moderators don't care.”
I've played on this site a lot (~3,000 games) however last week I got banned for cheating. I don't care about ratings, I did not cheat. They have a forum for appealing, however when I did this the moderators didn't overturn the obvious error. I play the same system in incredibly short games, there is no way that anyone who actually looks through my games would think I was cheating. Back to chess.com!
“Beware -zero support and abuse of power from mods”
There is zero support on this site. Not even an email link. Which considering your bombarded by "donate " prompts is terrible. This also means that moderators... abuse their powers and can allow cheating/ban whoever they like... making for the fairness factor to not be there on this site. Service Value Returns Quality
“Great for Playing Against People, However”
Nearly all of their practice programs are flawed. They present you with puzzles in which you find the "best move", but the moves the computer says are the best work off of a deeply flawed algorithm. It promotes getting check above all else, even when it is suicidal. Another example from my experiences with these puzzles is it presented me with a game in which I had the option to move my knight into a position in which it would either take the opponent's rook or queen, obviously the best move, however, their bot said that the best move was a suicidal check performed by my queen in which it could be taken out by a pawn. Yes, really. It constantly promotes these puzzles and analyses done by the bot, which needs improvement. This is why I do not recommend lichess beyond playing with people or friends. The community is great, the experience you can gain is great, but the bot they continually shove in your face will only serve to annoy you with its complete lack of ability to analyze.
“Lichess is dangerous to your health. READ this to understand”
When down to the last 5-8 seconds on your clock and while waiting for your opponent to finish making their move, your clock will instantly go to zero. So much frustration dealing with this that I spent hours more than I wanted to play. Now 24 hours later and my head still hurts, my body aches, and probably have blood clots as a result of dealing with this malicious web site. I've had to drink some alcohol, been putting a massager device on one of my legs and shortly after putting on my legs my heart was hurting badly and so put the massager all around my heart area. This site is dangerous to your health! Service
“Scammers”
For many that might not know this site has a bot that plays you pretending to be someone else that your playing. If you go to lobby and see there are almost 6 or 7 players waiting on players but yet if you start a quick game lets say 1 minute game. It seems like magic there are 200 players available to play you right away even tho there was no one in there to play 1 minute games. Also if you play an opening that your used to it almost seem like clockwork the bot plays exactly the same pattern as human would not.
“Disgusting”
The bravado and indignation with which thibault presents his site can be called nothing else; support is nonexistent, filled with elitists and $#*!s that would rather "look cool" than actually help you with your problem, the algorithm which the site uses to find puzzles is terrible, ineffective and does not help you become better; temporary bans are given out for no reason at all (as Paul said) probably because the mods are bored power-tripping idiots, I could go on but you get the picture. Stay away! Stick with chess.com.
“Cheater-infested abandonware”
Every other person you will play on this site is an engine cheater or has other guidance, making rating completely worthless as an indicator of skill. Playing games becomes incredibly anti-fun with player after player playing the exact same moves, with the exact same speed. Support people are non-existent, and automatic cheat detection is deficient to the point of being worthless, if any, that is, exists, in the first place.
“Lichess is a platform made by Scandinavian racists.”
It's honestly disgusting how badly managed this platform is. Every 2 or 3rd player is abusive, racist and homophobic. If you report that individual to moderators, the MOST they will do is timeout that person for EIGHT minutes. That is the penalty for threatening death and hostility upon other chess players -- 8 minutes in timeout. What an awful joke. Service Value Returns Quality
“Best chess site on the interwebs”
Hands down the best site there is for chess. It is amazing that the most popular chess site (not this one) actually prevents you from playing a timed game with a friend for free. (You have to play snail chess, where you move once per day or week!)
“Better than nothing...”
Lichess is free and has a pleasant UI, unlike Chess.com which is very busy and not particularly "friendly". As your victories mount, it will move you into higher level competition. Not bad. But, Lichess likes to play Big Brother and if you either walkaway or in my case, time-out while thinking-out moves. In Blitz, it will put you into a time-out like a wayward child. Not sure, but I think they also slow-down the rate at which they match you up with games, and/or match you up with lower-level players. Further, they won't respond to emails at *******@lichess.org, which I think is irresponsible. So, Lichess is... better than nothing. Products used:Free service Service Value Quality
“Unethical.”
Cheaters run amok on the site, protected by admins. Reporting them leads to being muted. Covertly muted, so that others can still talk to you but your replies aren't delivered (you are not told this). Unethical all around.
“Horrible site”
Worst chess site. Dictatorial management. Dumb developers. I can go on and on. Better to play by yourself. They allow cheaters. Better yet encourage it with minor slaps on their wrists. They punish those that let the time run out a few secs while youre thinking ofcourse more harshly than cheaters. I guess youre not allowed to think in this game i a losing position and have to quit the game,,, how stupid. They lag in the game review dept. 2 week wait time to see your games played... another dumb
“Played here for 6 months and then suddenly my account gets restricted”
Played here for 6 months and then suddenly my account gets restricted. I email them and they reply with a one sentence email saying I have been using computer assistance. My rating is 1700 on blitz, 1800 on Bullet and 2000 on rapid. My rating on 1 minute games are similar to what i have when i play 10min games. I beat a few good players at 2000 rating but have lost to several between 1200-1600 (not sure how they got that low rating and played insanely good but whatever). Noticed that when you play 1 min games, some players don't even think for a second. I played a game with 35 moves each, i lost on time and my opponent used 3 seconds. Not humanly possible. So looks like they have tons of people cheating using bots, and they dont care about those but restrict people who try and play fair. Worst site and support/admins are completely frauds. Service Value Returns Quality
“The worst staff support of the century.”
The staff support or moderators are very unhelpful. They do not reply to you even if you give them time to reply. The moderators are a disgrace to the definition of "staff". I give this a one star website because of the trigger happy banner moderators. I implore you to please not go to this website. They will ban you even if you play fair or you get too good.
“Free as in freedom”
Lichess is free, nonprofit and doesn't run ads. All the features are available to you. It has the strongest in-browser engine (WebAssembly-based stockfish, much faster than stockfish.js on other sites), and even stronger server-based analysis using native code on powerful computers (for free!).

fraudulent website in 2024:
How To Remove Your Information From the Internet
Whether you like it or not, unfortunately, the Internet has all your personal information stored. How did that happen? Every time you visit a simple site and accept cookies, consent to their forms, or download an app, unscrupulous data brokers collect not just your phone number, name, AND address. They also sell this to third parties, which creates a $1 billion industry a year. Your collected personal data is used by buyers to send you never-ending spam emails, targeted ads, and, of course, telemarketing calls. Crooks use all your data without remorse.
We can help. Many people have asked us about how to remove your personal information from the Internet. If you want your data deleted entirely from the online world, contact our official partners at Incogni immediately.
