Indian Cola Surrogate

How the scam works:

If you travel to India or any other South Asian country, you need to stay hydrated due to the hot climate.

Let's say that while you're walking around town, you get thristy and want to buy a bottle of cola from the street vendors, called “dhabas”. The drink will be bottled in real Coca Cola or Pepsi bottles. It will look like the real stuff and will have a similar taste. However, unless it’s a sealed can, don’t trust it.

These are carbonated and colored drinks homemade by the sellers in unsanitary conditions. Children are paid a few Rupees by the people making the cola, to go around town and collect the empty cola bottles.

How to avoid:

Buy your drinks and food only at legitimate shops to avoid any surprises.
