Property Watch Offer

How the scam works:

Many communities have implemented property watch programs to help keep homeowners’ properties safe while they are away on trips. These programs are a great benefit to residents as officers will keep an eye on their property while they're gone.

However, scammers are attempting to use these programs as a way to look for homes to ransack and rob.

Police are warning residents in these communities that scammers are telephoning posing as police officers with the Property Watch program and offering enrollment. If interested, they are asking the residents to advise them of the dates that they will be away so they can watch their houses and "protect them from breaking and entering". Of course, once away, the thieves will clean out the homes.

How to avoid:

Be aware that the police will never contact homeowners asking them of dates they will be out of town. It is up to the homeowner to contact the program to have their home watched. If you receive a call such as this you need to get as much information as you can from the person, try to get a return telephone number and then hang up and call law enforcement to notify them of the call and give them the scammer’s information.
