Kik Freebie Scam

How the scam works:

You receive a text message on your mobile phone stating: "Kik has recently reached the incredible milestone of 100 million users! As a token of our appreciation, we are giving lucky users FREE gifts, and you have been selected! Visit www.kikfreebie.com (or applewinner.com or amazonkiklucky.com) to see what you have won! Prices are awarded on a first come, first serve basis, so claim yours today!" The website provided could be a different one, such as www.kiklucky.com or www.kikgifts.com. Most of the times, scammer promise free iPhone 6 phones.

For those of you who don't know, Kik is a legitimate smartphone messenger with a built-in browser. You can talk, browse and share with your friends, similar to Whatsapp functions.

Watch the video below to see what the major difference is between Kik and Whatsapp.

Kik App Versus Whatsapp Video

However, the Kik Freebie Promotion scam is a bogus campaign put together by crooks claiming to be from the real Kik company.

Once you click on the link, a one-page website pops up inviting you to write your username, in order to see what you won. Once there, it doesn't matter if you put "John" or "xvjnfdsbkj" - you will "qualify as our Platinum level prize winner". Here is next: once you click OK, you are required to download and open a free app (on our phone showed Expedia and Game of War as options). "After completion this page will unlock", it says the message.

Well, you download the app and wait...and wait... and nothing comes in. Some say the scammers get a referral fee for bringing downloads to certain apps.

How to avoid:

This is another bogus unsolicited text message. The message doesn't even addresses to you with your real name or username. It doesn't matter what username you type in once the link opens, you will be an automatic winner, even if you don't have a real Kik username! When you receive a prize...you'll get it. You don't have to work for it anymore. Always do your research and work only for legitimate employers.
