Funeral Home Balance

How the scam works:

You are going through a rough time after losing one of your family members. The funeral was yesterday and today you are trying to clean everything up and start dealing with various arrangements.

The phone rings: “Hi Mrs. Smith, I am Aidan Luciw, from the funeral home. Sorry to bother you, our condolences again. I know it’s a tough time and you just had the funeral yesterday, but you still owe us a balance of $125.17, for our services.”

Being smooth and coming up with whatever reason for the balance that’s still owing, “Aidan” requires you to pay immediately.

“We don’t want to keep calling you since you are going through a difficult time, but it’s better for you to pay as soon as possible, as interest will be added everyday and we know you spent a lot of money already”. Then he will ask for your credit card number.

How to avoid:

Don’t fall for this scam. The crooks check the obituaries everyday and know exactly all the details involved: your name, the deceased, the funeral home, etc. This is a scam hard to avoid by families that actually still have a real balance to pay. When a death in the family happens, try to pay in full.
