New Stripe Payment Scam Copies PayPal Notification Email

Stripe Payment Scam: How It Works

The financial transactions done online have become quite a routine for everyone in the last few years. Now you can buy, sell and send money through several mobile applications or other effective software. Stripe is one of them. It is a great online payment processing tool for internet businesses that allows its users to receive money easier than ever.

Taking advantage of the constant technology updates, criminals also prey on people's lack of knowledge and target them with various fraudulent practices. The latest scam is the Stripe Payment Email Notification. How does it work?

you received a payment through stripe

It is very similar to the PayPal Notification scam going around not too long ago. It works like this: You receive an email apparently coming from Stripe (see pic above), with the title subject: "PayPal Notification". Criminals impersonate the staff at the company and write that "you've just received a payment through Stripe". The amount is $1,059.98US. The email gives you a bunch of details about the transaction, such as the sender, his address and location.

The message also provides a link to the Stripe dashboard, to log in and accept the payment. The link will open a replica of the real Stripe website, which will ask you to insert your credentials. Once you give scammers that information, you can rest assured that your account will be vandalized.

Stripe Payment Scam: How To Avoid

Always look for red flags. In this case, if you look at the image above, you can see that the email coming from the Stripe Support has a weird spelling (Medina19@nonreplymed.com).

Do not click on the link provided. The best thing to do in this case is to log into your account straight from Stripe's website, by typing stripe.com in your browser first. If you are not yet comfortable with the Stripe technology, watch the video below to see how to use the dashboard properly.
