Upgrade Existing Home Security System

Home Alarm System Upgrade Scam: How it Works

You are working around the house and suddenly you get a knock at your door. You open it up and there is a man wearing a coverall uniform. A branded van is parked in the driveway.

"Good day! I am Peter McKay, I am with your security company," he says. "Well, I have some good news, we are now able to reduce your costs. We've upgraded our home security systems and I'll be happy to make your day!". What does that mean? Well, beware of this latest scam, going around these days. How does it work?

He also tells you that he is just there to take a look at your box just so he knows what to replace it with. You let him in, he goes about his job, then he asks to see the contracts and snaps some pictures of it. You may find it weird, but he explains he needs to know what kind of plan you are on.

"Perfect, we're almost done," he says. "We'll get you the new device to replace this one on Monday. It will just be a small charge of $23.99, but your bills will be way cheaper every month, so you'll cover this charge in no time. Shall we proceed?"

You do the math and according to what fake numbers he gives you realize that yes, within a year you will save a lot of money. And you give him your credit card. From here on, you know what can happen to it.

This is a scam that probably doesn't happen in every city, but it's our duty to educate the readers about what can happen if they face this scenario one day.

Upgrade Existing Home Security System Scam: How To Avoid

If this visit happens to you, make sure you ask the door-to-door "agent" to show his credentials. Not only the alarm system company ID, but his driver licence, too. No shame in doing that - better safe than sorry.

Companies do not send men on the street to check clients' devices or to offer deals. They have records on their clients' plans already.
