One-Way Street Reverse

How the scam works:

You are driving on a one-way narrow street (back alley) and the car in front of you stops, appearing to be breaking down.

You both stop, he steps out of his car and nicely asks you to reverse so he can somehow push it on the side to make room for you.

You comply, and while you are driving back, you surprisingly hit somebody or run over something (a bag with a laptop).

The scammers select the location of the whole scene very carefully, so you really can’t see the bag (person) at the moment of the impact. From something that should have been just a simple chore, you are now in trouble and have to cough up some cash for the damages. Don’t think you won’t – there are a few of them and it’s a back alley, remember?

How to avoid:

If you are really stuck and you feel like something is fishy, come out of the car and make it clear to the guy “hanging around” behind you pretending to be waiting for something that you are backing up and he should stay away, along with his belongings. Call the shots before they do.
