Lawn Care Scam

How the scam works:

(with video below) Several legitimate companies do great work but be aware of the Lawn Care Services scam going on these days. Let's look into it.

Maintaining your yard can be a very labour intensive and time-consuming job. So you decide that you are willing to pay someone to do the hard work for you, freeing up time for yourself. That's why when a random promotional flyer with a free quote from a local lawn care business lands in your mailbox you cannot be any happier. You call the company and agree to have them come by and give you a quote for fertilizing. How does the scam work?

Instead of the company providing you with a quote for the work, you come home to a sign posted on your lawn, detailing the work that has already been done. Wait a minute! You never agreed to have any services provided for your lawn or yard!

When you call the company in question to inquire about the services, you're told that you agreed to the services provided. If you disagree, they will try to convince you that by just saying "yes" to them you have "signed" a verbal contract.

Let's say you are a tough cookie and don't take this kind of nonsense. You are unflinching and say you won't pay them. Little do you know that they will continue to send over their employees to perform more work such as putting fertilizer on when you are away from home, even trespassing! That's even if your grass looks great before their arrival. You will keep receiving more invoices and your bill will increase over time.

Of course, you still refuse to pay and - as the phone conversations don't go anywhere - they will report you to the collections agency. Several victims received the calls from the collection agencies even when was too late.

These companies can pull off this scam without consequences by using fear tactics on the customer. You will repeatedly be told that you saying "Yes" to any of their questions is a verbal contract you are signing with the company. They will threaten to use the recorded conversations between yourself and the agency to collect their payments. The idea of a hit on their credit score makes the customer eventually pay out of fear.

These companies will not allow you to default your supposed debt to them. It will be a tough journey to get the company to drop your account, so the best method to avoid this scam is to learn how it works and how it can be prevented.

How to avoid the Lawn Care Services scam:

This is a hard scam to avoid, as many well-known local and national companies may apply this method. Always do your research into the particular company you will be contracting to do your work.

You should look into any reviews or comments about the company posted online. Look for the best lawn care companies on the local level. If the company you are looking into has pulled this scam before, there is a chance it will be some mention of it online.

Also, when talking to a representative from a company over the phone, avoid agreeing to any work, unless of course you are ready to purchase. The questions may be asked in a way that will trick you into saying yes for a service, so remember to think of your reply before responding to a question.

In the future avoid working with such companies in the first place, or pay close attention during phone calls and this should ensure you don't get scammed.
