How You Can Lose Your Smartphone And Your Money At The Same Time

Smartphone Purchase Scam: How It Works

There is a new epidemic going around these days in regards to smartphones that are being sold by regular people on online platforms such as Craigslist, eBay, Kijiji, or Oodle.

Imagine this: let's say you need a new phone. Since brand new ones are costly, you go online and look for one that is in good condition. Sure enough, you find a few that spark your interest, start negotiations with the owners, and finally get a reasonable price for one that's up your alley.

You meet the seller, who seems to be a very lovely person. You buy the mobile phone, use it - everything looks great. Except for two weeks later, when your phone stops working. What just happened?

The previous owner of the phone called his mobile service provider and reported it stolen, using his insurance rights. The company suddenly blocked the phone (now in your possession) and gave the other guy a new one. When you try to connect with the seller again, his email address will provide you with an error, or he will not respond.  Now you're out a phone and a few hundred dollars.

Unfortunately, this has been a severe issue in the last few weeks as more and more crooks are taking advantage of their insurance agreement.

Smartphone Purchase Scam: How To Avoid

It is very simple. Always buy your phones from authorized dealers that you can track down. It is a very trendy and economical thing to look online for better deals, but make sure you have the seller's coordinates (more than an email address). Don't be afraid to ask for their ID or take a snapshot of the transaction, to have the proof that they sold it to you.
