Green Deal Energy

How the scam works:

The government of the UK is warning residents to be on the lookout for “doorstep scammers” who are looking to take advantage of the Green Deal initiative.

The Green Deal initiative allows homes and businesses to make improvements that foster greater energy efficiency and to pay for them through increased savings on their energy bills.

The scammers are going door to door, claiming to be contractors that are part of the Green Deal initiative. They are advising homeowners that they are eligible for thousands of pounds worth of home improvements as long as they pre-pay an “administration fee”.

Of course, the improvements never get done, as the scammers have no affiliation with the Green Deal.

How to avoid:

This type of scam is not only being pulled in the UK; any area that offers these types of incentive programs is being hit by these scammers. The best way to avoid becoming a victim is by educating yourself on the energy efficiency initiatives that are available in your area and discovering how they work.

Also, be aware that none of these programs requires an “administration fee” up front. In the specific case of the Green Deal, there are only certain contractors the government is allowing to do the work and they provide proof that they are part of the Green Deal program.

It is also advisable to contact your local authorities if you are approached by a bogus contractor. If you live in England, Scotland, or Wales, you can call the Energy Saving Advice Service at 0300 123 1234.
