Grand Theft Auto V Scam

How the scam works:

Just about everyone is a gamer these days. Most people love to do nothing more than unwind after a long day of work by killing a few zombies or going crazy behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle. And the real diehards are the ones who anticipate the release of new editions of their favorite games, marking their calendars and counting down the days like a little kid at Christmas.

Grand Theft Auto is such a game. The new version, GTA V, will be released in 2015. Sadly, this anticipation from fans has led to scammers coming out of the woodwork, trying to profit off the game before it has even been released.

There has been a wealth of websites opened claiming to have the beta keys for the new GTA V. Beta keys are the codes that give access to early – or beta – versions of the game, created and to be played for test purposes, to help developers work out the kinks of the game.

These deceitful sites work by asking people to share the link via social media such as Facebook, “liking” the website and then sharing the message five times. Supposedly, once that has been done, you can click a link based on what gaming console you use to get a beta version of the game. Once you click the link though, you are really downloading a malicious file to your PC.

How to avoid:

First of all, Rockstar Games, the developers of GTA V, has not released a beta version of the game. If they had, there would have been media reports because it is so out of character for the close-to-the-vest nature of their business model. Secondly, it always pays to realize you rarely get something for nothing. It is best to keep in mind the old adage: “If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is”! Rockstar Games announced that no one outside the company has even played the new Grand Theft Auto. The game has been kept under lock and key.
