New Security Company Scam

How The Scam Works:

(with video below) You’re watching TV at home when you get a knock at your door. You open it up, and there are a couple of men wearing uniforms you’ve never seen before. A branded van is parked in the driveway.

“Sorry to bother you, we’re Jimmy and Peter; we’re with your security company,” one says. “Good news, the company got bought out by ours [insert name], and you might be able to get some savings”.

Well, beware of this latest scam, going around these days. How does it work?

They tell you that they’re just here to work a few minutes on your power box and make sure the connections are all in place, and that it’ll only take a minute. You let them in, they go about their job, give you some papers to sign, and then leave.

It’s only when you get your next bill in the mail that you realize you’ve been scammed. What you signed wasn’t a document saying they fixed your power box. Instead, you’ve been signed up for a three-year contract with another security company.

And since your original company didn’t actually get bought out, you’re now paying for two different security services.

 

How To Avoid The New Security Company Scam:

If this happens to you, make sure you confirm with your security company before signing anything. It would also be helpful to read what you agree to. If you have already been scammed, make some calls.

Talk to the company you got scammed into paying. Often, the people in charge are unaware of this scam and will hopefully let you go once the situation is explained.
