Security Job Scam

How the scam works:

There is a new scam that has been reported to happen throughout North America. The scam is being perpetrated by bogus companies advertising alleged security jobs while requiring you to undergo unnecessary training to get a license. The cost is from $300 up $1,500.

The trick they use is in the contract you sign before starting the training. It is mentioned that employment is not guaranteed. After not getting the job (surprise!), the victim is called up again for a new opportunity at the same security job, but now they must bring $50, needed for background checking. Needless to say, they don't get the job this time either.

In a different variation of the scam, the victim is called for an interview and told to bring $150 or $200 in cash for a background check. When the applicant goes to their office this will be in a odd building that is probably empty and th scammers rented a room. To cover their scam, crooks tell victims they cannot guarantee a job after the background check. Applicant pay the money, but never get a job.

How to avoid:

Always use reputable companies when it comes to hiring, and always be sure to read the fine print as well. Check online to see if you really need a license to be a security guard in your state. Research the name of the company with the Better Business Bureau and ensure it’s in good standing.
